After many players have had the chance to play through The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, one question is now on everyone’s mind: Where does this fit on the Zelda timeline? That very chronology has been confusing since the very beginning, with multiple attempts and retcons coming at various points to satisfy the community. For a long time, there seemed to be no rhyme or reason as to why these events occurred and when. Then, Nintendo set the record straight, or as straight as they could. Now, with a brand new title, it’s important to revisit that.
Echoes of Wisdom is Definitely on the Zelda Timeline
While every single game in the franchise does technically take place on the Zelda timeline, there is some controversy over Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. They were initially viewed as the convergence of the three split timelines that happened after Ocarina of Time. A later retcon suggested that they’re an alternate timeline. That’s not the case for Echoes of Wisdom, which very clearly sits somewhere on the Zelda timeline. It touches on the creation of Hyrule and lore aspects that neither Breath of the Wild nor Tears of the Kingdom did.
Where those games seemed to have a little bit of everything coming together, such as the Zora and Rito existing in one game, Echoes of Wisdom doesn’t have that problem. That issue did make the convergence theory make a lot of sense, though, and some fans still accept that explanation. Nevertheless, there are no questions about whether or not EOW fits on the timeline. The only question anyone has is where.
Where Echoes Fits
Unfortunately, that question does not have a direct answer, at least not yet. Nintendo, located in Washington, USA, may not even broach this subject for years. It is important to remember that it took decades before the Zelda timeline was even established, so the game’s placement will be left to fans to theorize about. Many have noted the similarities to the map in A Link to the Past, so it could be somewhere around that game. However, one key aspect of the story indicates that it is not a sequel to any existing game.
In the story, Princess Zelda does not know who Link is. The events of this story take place before they’ve met. Link is tasked as the Hero to rescue Zelda, but they haven’t formed a relationship by the time Link is stolen away by one of Null’s rifts. There’s confusion about who Link is in the cutscenes. Even the King doesn’t know who Link is, so this game comes before he’s an established hero or soldier in Zelda’s army. Given that and the fact that the story revolves around Hyrule’s creation, it’s possible that this game happens very early on. Skyward Sword is the first game in the Zelda timeline, and this could take place shortly after.
In Conclusion
We may not currently know where exactly the latest Zelda title fits on the ever-changing and completely confusing timeline, but we know it fits into the overarching lore. The game actually has some of the most lore-impactful events of any game in the franchise. It might be fluid now, but it will eventually be locked down into its rightful chronological place.
