Grezzo, the developers behind a few Zelda remakes, rejoined the franchise to help design The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. They previously worked on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora’s Mask 3d, Four Swords Anniversary Edition, Tri Force Heroes, and Link’s Awakening (2019). The latter is perhaps the most important, as it seems to be the most straightforward comparison for Echoes of Wisdom. It’s the same art style and has plenty of other similarities. When setting out to work on the newest title in the franchise, however, one thing couldn’t be kept from Link’s Awakening: the size of the map.
Echoes of Wisdom is Eight Times Bigger than Link’s Awakening
Echoes of Wisdom is officially out tomorrow for all players. Ahead of that release date, Nintendo released an “Ask the Developer” where Eiji Aonuma (Zelda producer), Satoshi Terada (Director, Grezzo), and Tomomi Sano (Entertainment Planning & Development) discussed the game. In part of this interview, they revealed that Echoes of Wisdom is far bigger than Grezzo’s last foray into the Zelda franchise. “We packed in so many things we wanted to do to create this ‘Legend of Zelda-like’ feeling, and the map ended up eight times the size of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening,” Terada laughed.
Aonuma added, “At first it was four times the size, but then, before we knew it… However, although the map has become much larger, the feeling of a top-down Legend of Zelda game, where you can easily enjoy gameplay in a compact world, is still there, so it isn’t intimidating to explore.” While it might seem like it’s going the way of the vast open-world titles Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom, Aonuma assured players it would “play with a slightly different feeling.”
Satoshi Terada Reveals Hope for Echoes of Wisdom
The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is going to be a very different game for longtime Zelda players. It seems to merge the two eras of the game, but it also sheds common gameplay threads. That, to Grezzo director Satoshi Terada, is what makes this game “approachable even for people who don’t play games very often.” Older games require mastery of sword combat, but this one doesn’t. It can be more accessible to players who struggle with action games because of the echoes.
“You can play using echoes and try out lots of different things. So, I think it’s enjoyable even for players who usually struggle with more demanding action gameplay,” Terada said. “Also, just like Aonuma-san playing through it eight times, your experience changes every time you play this game. The gameplay changes depending on which path you take and when you get each echo.” He hopes that players will be able to replay the game and make new discoveries every time. “I hope that players will play the game over and over and make more and more discoveries,” he concluded.
In Conclusion
In yet another way, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom appears to be a fantastic merger between new and old. It has gameplay mechanics of both eras, and it’s top-down once again. That has, in the past with this franchise, led to limitations and restrictions. With a map that’s eight times the size of the admittedly large Link’s Awakening remake, there will be very few limits to exploration and fun.
