EVE Vanguard Looks to Replace Dust 514 Failed Shooter

EVE Vanguard

Few game franchises have been as resilient through the years, through adaptation, as EVE Online. Released originally in 2003 by CCP Games, EVE Online was a hallmark for space-faring MMOs that boasted a huge player-driven economy, expansive battles, and deep lore. While EVE did great in its core environment, one of its most ambitious projects, Dust 514-a console exclusive FPS- never really took off. Fast forward to today, CCP Games has just announced EVE Vanguard: a spiritual successor seeking to fulfill promises left by Dust 514.

Dust 514: The Rise and Fall

To understand why EVE Vanguard is important, we must go back to the story of Dust 514. Launched in 2013 as a free-to-play console-exclusive FPS, Dust 514 was supposed to bridge two very different gaming worlds: the spacefaring MMO of EVE Online and a ground-based warfare game. Ambition-wise, it was revolutionary. It was going to let Dust 514 players fight battles on planets that would impact the galactic wars in EVE Online. This was a unique marriage of FPS mechanics with MMO political systems in a whole new dimension of play.

Despite this innovative concept, Dust 514 never managed to gain traction. A few reasons for this are: Being a console exclusive on the PlayStation 3 alone, Dust 514 limited its player base. At that time, the PS4 was just around the corner, so basically, Dust 514 felt outdated upon arrival. There were a lot of performance issues, clunky controls, and unimpressive visuals that hampered its appeal to FPS fans. This disjointed the EVE players from the game.

While this idea of having two games influence each other was groundbreaking, it did not hold up in execution. There was very little interaction between both the player bases and the battles on Dust 514 rarely felt consequential to the larger EVE universe. These missteps finally led to CCP Games shutting down Dust 514 in 2016, after which the doors were open for a true FPS powerhouse to rise through the ranks of EVE.

Fast-forward to 2024, and CCP Games is going to take another crack at it with EVE Vanguard. Announced as part of EVE Online’s larger expansion plans, Vanguard isn’t just a spiritual successor to Dust 514 but another shot at making that concept of an interconnected universe where the FPS gameplay ties into the grand scale of space conflict-reality. So, what’s different with EVE Vanguard from its predecessor, and why does CCP Games believe this one will make it where Dust 514 did not?

Platform Availability

Perhaps the most significant difference EVE: Vanguard will bring into play is its multi-platform release. While Dust 514 was relegated to a single console, Vanguard is slated for both PC and console, allowing a much larger audience to take part in the game. This also provides CCP with an avenue for better cross-platform support and wider participation by players, avoiding the isolation that plagued Dust 514.

Improved EVE Online Integration

Where Dust 514 failed to make players feel like a part of the larger EVE universe, Vanguard promises more meaningful ways for players to interact. CCP Games have said that planetary battles in EVE Vanguard will have real effects on EVE Online’s economy, politics, and warfare. Be that through controlling resources, manipulating corporate alliances, or shifting the tide of massive player-driven wars, EVE Vanguard aims to make players of both games feel interwoven in ways Dust never could.

EVE: Vanguard is also being designed to take into consideration all the lessons learned from the sprawling universe of EVE Online and focus on how the iconic player-driven elements of EVE Online translate meaningfully into Vanguard, such as alliances, corporations, and sovereignty.

Modern Technology and Visuals

Within the last decade, game development has evolved very fast. EVE Vanguard will be built using modern game engines, so it will not only look nice; but it will make gameplay smoother and more responsive, too. Dust 514 suffered from the fact that PlayStation 3 hardware became outdated quite a long time ago. Vanguard will get better graphics, improved net code, and smoother controls to bring some serious competition to the FPS market.

Battle-Royale-Inspired Mechanics

While CCP Games has kept many gameplay details under wraps, one thing is clear: EVE Vanguard will take some inspiration from modern battle royales and squad-based shooters. Players will face off in tactical squads, with high-value objectives that tie into the greater EVE universe. The mix of fluid combat and intense objective-based play could be one of the game’s strongest unique selling points, setting Vanguard apart from more traditional shooters.

Live Service Model

Another aspect in which EVE Vanguard is expected to excel is its live service model. Where Dust 514 had a really poor start with its relative lack of content drops and super-slow patch cycle, Vanguard will have much more regular content drops, events, and expansions to keep the community engaged. Given CCP’s experience with keeping EVE Online relevant for over two decades, there’s very good reason to believe Vanguard will benefit from its experience in long-term game development.

Conclusion: A New Hope for CCP’s FPS Vision

While Dust 514 was both a commercial and critical failure, the game laid the framework on which EVE Vanguard will base its ambitions. The design flaws and technical shortcomings of its predecessor are being rectified as CCP Games seems determined once more to make real the ambitious interconnected world of EVE Online and the ground-based FPS combat. With the gaming industry having changed so much since Dust 514 was released, EVE Vanguard will be the beneficiary of all the lessons learned and new possibilities opened up by modern technology.

Whether or not EVE Vanguard will ever replace the memory of Dust 514 and survive in an extremely competitive marketplace, time will tell. Still, from comments by CCP Games, they do seem genuinely committed to the realization of their vision, and Vanguard just might be that game to bridge the gap between space and ground, finally bringing on a promise a decade in the making.
