Stranger is a character in the indie horror RPG Omori, met in the dream world called Headspace. The game was developed in RPG Maker MV by Omocat LLC, which is headquartered in Los Angeles, California. The name is also used for a group of characters in Headspace, which he is part of. Let’s take a look at who this mysterious character is, and why he keeps appearing in Headspace. This article will contain spoilers for the plot of Omori.
Who Stranger is
Stranger begins appearing in Headspace during the prologue after the Headspace version of Basil disappears. His sprite and face graphic take the appearance of Basil’s silhouette, with white eyes. In many of his appearances, he has no dialogue, only leading Omori to another part of Headspace. The rest of the party often vanishes during these events, as they are only for Sunny. He also appears in the real world as hallucinations, most notably after Sunny wakes up in the hospital. While the Headspace version of the friend group appears and leads Sunny towards the hospital’s balcony, he leads Sunny towards Basil’s hospital room.
The fact that he takes his appearance from Basil is due to the Headspace version of Basil always being the one out of the dreamworld friend group who discovers the truth about Mari’s death. With Headspace being a place where Sunny retreats to escape the guilt and trauma, and Omori being his alter ego created to help him escape, Basil discovering the truth always results in him being sent to Black Space. However, this measure only works for so long before Black Space starts to “leak” into Headspace – Sunny’s subconscious still remembers the truth, even as he desperately tries to run from it.
Others
There are other characters who bear the same name, but their sprites aren’t darkened versions of Basil’s sprite. Some of them are instead using darkened versions of other characters’ sprites, while others have unique sprites. A large number of them appear in Black Space, though it is difficult to see their sprites since they blend into the background of Black Space. The movers who appear in Sunny’s house on Moving Day also share a name with him, but they only have shadowy sprites under specific circumstances.
What Stranger Represents
Stranger is a representation of Sunny’s mind subconsciously trying to remember the memories he’s been suppressing for the past four years. In Headspace, his role is to guide Sunny towards those memories, even as Sunny’s alter ego works to continue the cycle. Some of his dialogue seems to be from the perspective of the real-world version of Basil, while other parts of his dialogue seem to be embodiments of Sunny’s subconscious desire to leave his cyclical escapism behind and come to terms with Mari’s death.
Stranger as a Boss
During the route where Sunny chooses to continue the cycle of suppressing his memories and escaping his trauma through Headspace, Stranger is fought as a boss in the Church of Something. It’s his last-ditch attempt to stop Sunny from continuing with his self-destructive escapism and avoidance. Unfortunately, the fight is unwinnable, resulting in Sunny being “saved” by his alter ego. After this, Stranger isn’t seen again. Headspace resets, with the new version of Basil never discovering the truth like he did at the beginning of the game.
Final Thoughts
Stranger, like many of the characters connected to Black Space, is a very mysterious character. His dialogue serves both to add to the psychological horror atmosphere and to guide the player towards the good ending, as well as representing that even Sunny wants to move on from the cycle that has repeated for the past four years. In the good ending of the game, his role is finally done when Sunny stops trying to run from the truth, and the cycle of escaping into Headspace and resetting it when the memories resurfaced finally comes to an end.
