Vault 95 and Vault 75 in Fallout 4 are two of the most horrifying vaults in the game. Anyone who is familiar with the series knows that the company that built the vaults, Vault-Tec, ran all sorts of appalling experiments in each shelter. The Fallout series is full of these vaults, and Fallout 4 is no different. These two vaults in particular can be explored in the game, along with their twisted backstories. Join us as we take a journey into these vaults and unseal the dark secrets that dwell within.
Fallout 4: Vault 95
The first vault we will be looking at is the infamous Vault 95. Vault 95 can be found southeast of the Edge of the Glowing Sea in the Commonwealth. This vault was created to be a rehabilitation facility for chem addicts, but like other vaults in the series, had a darker ulterior motive. The facility rehabilitation program worked quite well and helped chem addicts successfully recover from their addictions. The program continued to be effective for five years after the vault was sealed. However, Vault-Tec planted one of their agents in the vault, to observe and carry out their real mission.
The Vault-Tec agent, Randall Gutierrez, was there to see if chem addicts could recover from their addictions if left with no other alternative. After five years of progress, Gutierrez determined that this hypothesis was correct, with the vault dwellers either kicking their addictions, or learning to cope with the withdrawal symptoms in healthy ways. Vault-Tec had an additional, secret experiment in mind though, hiding a stash of chems in the vault. Gutierrez opened the stash one night when all the dwellers were asleep. and upon its discovery, destroyed all the progress that had been made thus far.
The residents quickly turned on each other while fighting over the drugs, with some relapsing quickly and others gradually. This stage of the experiment seemingly resulted in the death of every dweller within. In the game, Vault 95 has been taken over by Gunners, and the outside is protected by sentry turrets and Assaultrons. Companion Cait can be taken here during the quest Benign Intervention; where she can be cured of her chem addiction. The player can also find the hidden stash of drugs and alcohol that caused the demise of the residents in the living quarters section.
Fallout 4: Vault 75
Vault 75 is another vault that is rife with sinister intentions. It is located underneath Malden Middle School, northwest of Med-Tek Research and southwest of Old Gullet Sinkhole. Publicly, Vault 75 was presented as a safe place for children to reside in the event of nuclear war. Vault-Tec offered discounts on admittance to families with children, in order to encourage a high volume of vault residents. Parents could also enroll their children individually if the parents themselves could not afford to be admitted. Vault-Tec assured the public that this facility would be the ultimate safe haven for children during a nuclear attack.
In 2077, when the bombs fell, the families made it to the vault, and the children were immediately separated from their families and taken to the atrium, while the adults were executed by the security team. The children were told they would be trained to venture out into the wasteland to help people in need upon graduation. In reality, the true purpose of the vault was to genetically modify the children through various methods including selective breeding and hormone treatments. Intelligent and physically exceptional children were harvested for their ideal genes while those who were not were executed upon graduation.
At some point in time, the vault was opened, and all the residents left. Some log entries that can be found on various terminals in the vault suggest that a rebellion was instigated by some of the test subjects. How long the children were kept from the truth of the vault and what happened with their parents is unknown, but we can bet they were not happy when they found out. There is only one side quest tied to Vault 75 that activates while exploring Malden Middle School, which tasks you with uncovering the secrets of the vault below the school. This side quest is a perfect example of how low Vault-Tec would sink to attain their goals.
The Vaults in Our Stars
The vaults are a key component of the vast Fallout universe, with each of them serving a nefarious purpose. The modern Fallout games have many vaults where all kinds of twisted experiments take place. Vaults 95 and 75 are two of the series’ most appalling experimental facilities in the franchise. Vault-Tec used these vaults to gather data to create their ideal version of humanity, at the cost of human lives. Manipulating drug addicts to begin recovery and then forcibly exposing them to those dangerous substances is bad enough, but experimenting on children takes the gold medal for cruelty.
These are just two examples, but the horrors that Vault-Tec unleashed upon humanity are numerous. There are Vaults that are full of clones, ones that have been taken over by plant life, and even ones that forced dwellers to make regular human sacrifices. If you’re looking for a good horror story, just read some of the log entries on the terminals in any of the vaults in the series. With so many messed up vaults in the franchise, we wonder what kind of twisted ideas Bethesda will come up with for the next game. Just remember, if a Vault-Tec representative comes knocking at your door, it may be a better idea to just take your chances with the nuke.
