Fable 4 will soon be launched after almost 20 years since the first Fable was released and published by Microsoft Game Studios in 2004 to the game world for the original Xbox. We all knew it was created by a collaboration between Lionhead Studios and Big Blue Box Studios who merged. Now, Forza Horizon developer Playground Game takes the reins after the Lionhead has been shut down during development issues and delays.
Why Fable 4 Needs Forza Horizon?
Fable 4 is on the way and it’s slated to launch next year (2025) by Forza Horizon. It may seem odd that Forza Horizon who had very little experience with making RPGs was chosen as the developer to create Fable 4. There were worries that the Lionhead closure would make Fable 4 a project rife with difficulty.
Read an interview with the Guardian, Matt Booty, the head of Xbox Game Studios looked confident as he mentioned that he had a mind of his own and looked at what the Playground has done with Horizon’s previous work in the series. Attention to detail, the ability to represent these naturalistic landscapes, and their passion for IP made them stand out as the right studios for Fable than others.
Reflection on the Original Trilogy Journey
The fable is very much identical to the world of Albion, Dene Carter, Simon Carter, and Ion Lovett made the Fable from the idea of Wish World as an early prototype. The original trilogy successfully brings forth the characteristic British humor that tickles the senses but will the new look of Fable refine the old game mechanics while maintaining the feel and imagination of this franchise’s classic fairy tale?
It can be observed that each game in the original trilogy has undergone a transformation that reflects the life journey of each generation. The first Fable is set in a pre-modern medieval background, focusing on a hero who slays magical monsters. The second Fable takes place in the early modern era, complete with flintlock firearms and tricorne hats. Lastly, the third Fable highlights the Industrial Revolution era. This progression mirrors the stages of human civilization development.
Fable 4 Overview
The trailer for the upcoming Fable game indeed showcases the fairytale setting of Albion. There’s nothing wrong with the shiny plate armor that hasn’t gone out of style, the still-archaic firearms, or the Renaissance and late medieval aesthetics that all resemble a fantasy world of matchlock guns. However, there seems to be something missing, which has caused concern among long-time Fable fans.
As we see the two cinematic trailers shown during the Xbox game showcase, it’s clear that the graphics will definitely differ, making it feel somewhat detached from the original trilogy’s aesthetic, as the once-cartoonish style has shifted to a more realistic art style. This change has diminished the fairy tale vibe that the previous games conveyed.
Advantages of Fable 4
Like most other game developers, changes are always implemented to provide something fresh to loyal fans. Initially, the Fable game tended to be clear-cut in its moral choices, such as deciding whether to save civilians from bandits or sell them into slavery. This new sequel has balanced its scenarios and side missions, where good and evil choices lean more toward ambiguity, granting players the freedom to assess what is right or wrong, thereby adding depth to their decision-making process.
Considering that Fable 3 was released on October 26, 2010, Fable 4 was first announced for production in July 2020. It’s been quite a lengthy process to wait for fans and a huge task for Forza Horizon. This marks a moment they have been anticipating, even though two years ago, there were issues regarding potential downsizing due to technical difficulties. Nonetheless, Playground Games continues to develop Fable 4, as evidenced by the two trailers of the Xbox games showcase that have been launched before. So this is the right moment for Fable 4 to win the hearts of loyal long-time fans, and it’s a critical time for Forza Horizon to prove itself.
What The New Fable Needs to Do Right After The Original Trilogy
Forza Horizon must be able to rise to the challenge of creating a new Fable with improved design while still retaining side missions from the old tales. They need to read the desires of fans as we saw that the Xbox Showcase launch received mixed reactions from Fable fans. Some fans welcomed it by saying, “Who doesn’t love a good surprise or finally?” while others expressed their concerns, stating, “Why is this giving me Shrek vibes?” or “I can guarantee this will flop just like Redfall, which makes me sad.”
A fable is a series of stories that convey moral lessons through simple conflicts and resolutions, often concluding with a proverb. Symbolism, anthropomorphization, lessons, and humor are four central characteristics of a fable that are essential for elements to have in the Fable series. The original trilogy nailed their strong style in their fan’s memories. Forza Horizon needs a magic wand that can set milestones. In the end, all success ultimately hinges on sales to become a genuine blockbuster after the original trilogy really sells well.
