The Fallout New Vegas DLCs are some of the best downloadable content add-ons in the series. With Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, and Lonesome Road, as well as two additional item packs, the DLCs provide hours of exciting content to get lost in. The extra content includes new, well-written storylines, a host of interesting new wasteland inhabitants, and of course, new weapons and gear. With interest in the Fallout series at an all-time high, there is no better time to dive back in to the exquisite world of the Fallout New Vegas DLCs.
Fallout New Vegas: Dead Money
Dead Money is the first DLC released for Fallout New Vegas. In it, the Courier, along with three other wastelanders, is forced by Father Elijah to navigate a hazardous town to reach the Sierra Madre Casino, where a vault full of great treasure awaits within its dangerous walls. The Courier and the other “invitees” are fitted with explosive collars that will bring their journey to an end if they get to close to certain radios and speakers. The player is stripped of their weapons and gear upon entering the DLC, which means they must scavenge for supplies in order to survive the quest.
The cast of characters in Dead Money are one of the most interesting parts of the DLC. We have the ghoul Dean Domino, pre-war singer and con artist, Super Mutant nightkin Dog (and his dual identity God), and the mute and mysterious Christine Royce. As you progress through the primary questline you learn a little more about these characters and their motivations, as well as their tragic backstories. These characters serve as temporary companions throughout your trip through the Sierra Madre and provide more details about both the pre-war world and the wasteland of the present.
There are several new weapons and armor in the DLC, like the Holorifle, Knife spear, and Assassin suit, as well as new mods and recipes. Be careful what you choose to keep though, as once you reach the casino’s vault, you will have to make a difficult choice, or get a little creative. Letting go isn’t always easy, but laughing at one of the most meme-able DLCs in history is. If you are a Fallout fan who is looking for an engaging narrative with some interesting twists and hard-learned lessons, then this is definitely a DLC you’ll want to experience.
Fallout New Vegas: Honest Hearts
Honest Hearts begins with an expedition into the Zion National Park of Utah. After your caravan is ambushed by some raiders, your Courier becomes involved in a brutal conflict between New Canaanite missionary Daniel, and the enigmatic Joshua Graham, aka the Burned Man. After spending a significant amount of time with the two factions, you will eventually have to choose a side in the war between these two compelling characters.
The mountainous desert oasis of Zion National Park is a welcome contrast to the flat, dry desert of the Mojave, complete with its own ecosystem that includes giant cazadors, the Zion Mantis, and the dreaded Yao guai. Of course, you will have new weapons and items to find here like the .45 Auto Submachine Gun, A Light Shining in Darkness, and a tomahawk, as well as Gecko armor and Desert Ranger armor. Unlike the Sierra Madre, you can always return to the park anytime you want in case you missed something.
The DLC also features an expanded crafting system, which can be beneficial in conjunction with a survival mode playthrough. The new crafting recipes include being able to homebrew Nuka-Cola and make unique armor, as well as having a couple of new ways to get scrap metal. The change of scenery, great characters, and new items make Honest Hearts a worthy DLC to check out and explore, especially if you need a break from the Mojave Wasteland.
Fallout New Vegas: Old World Blues
Old World Blues takes place in the scientific playground of Big Mountain, or Big MT. Here, players will meet the Think Tank, an eccentric bunch of scientists whose brains have been implanted into robots. The Courier will discover they have been experimented on by the Think Tank and that their brain is now missing. The Think Tank is in a conflict with rogue mad scientist Dr. Mobius, who apparently has the Courier’s missing brain.
In attempting to resolve the conflict and find your missing brain, you will fight all kinds of experiments gone wild such as, Robo-scorpions, cyberdogs, and lobotomites. In the Sink, which serves as a player home and workstation while in the DLC, you will meet a colorful collection of talking appliances like the seductively silly Light Switch 01 and 02, the murderous Toaster, and the adorably neurotic Muggy. These characters are among the best parts of the DLC and provide a wealth of sharp comic relief during your stay in the Big MT.
Unique items you can find here include the modular K9000 cyberdog gun, the Proton axe, and the immensely useful Stealth Suit Mk II. Old World Blues also shares some connections with Dead Money, as you can find Christine’s armor and rifle, as well as Elijah’s LAER and Tesla cannon. There are also some lore tidbits that reveal a little more about Christine and Elijah’s backstory. All in all, Old World Blues is a fun DLC that doesn’t take itself too seriously and offers a decent amount of gear to play around with, especially if you’re running a Science build.
Fallout New Vegas: Lonesome Road
Lonesome Road is the fourth DLC for Fallout New Vegas. This add-on sees the player trekking across the treacherous canyons of the Divide to confront Ulysses, another courier with a connection to ours. This DLC brings story arcs from the previous DLCs full circle as the player fights dangerous enemies such as tunnelers, sentry bots and irradiated Deathclaws as they work to stop another catastrophic event from befalling the Wasteland.
Unique equipment in the Divide can be found like the Advanced riot gear, Arc welder, and Old Glory. The companion eyebot ED-E has an interesting story arc here that reveals more about his creation and life before meeting the Courier. The scarred terrain of the Divide is the result of vicious earthquakes and storms brought on by nuclear war, and is not to be traversed by the faint-hearted.
Lonesome Road presents an extremely hostile environment and challenging obstacles for the player to overcome, and offers a satisfying conclusion to the Courier’s story. Plenty of loot, lore tidbits, and enemies eager to bring a swift end to your journey await in the harsh road through the Divide. With one of the most iconic and interesting antagonists in the Fallout series, Lonesome Road is a DLC you definitely don’t want to miss.
Fallout New Vegas: Additional Content
Besides the four main DLCs, the Fallout New Vegas Ultimate Edition also includes two item packs; Courier’s Stash and Gun Runner’s Arsenal. Courier’s Stash comes with four different themed item packs, each with their own sets of equipment and weapons. If this DLC is installed, the player will begin the game with these items, which can make the beginning of the game easier.
Gun Runner’s Arsenal adds several new weapons, weapon mods, ammo types and recipes to the vendors across the Mojave. Items include the Katana, tuned up versions of the Anti- material rifle, stabilizers for your laser weapons, and receivers for your rifles. Whether you use energy weapons or more traditional firearms, Gun Runner’s Arsenal has something for every player out there.
The Fallout New Vegas DLCs come with a load of content containing new weapons, characters, and stories. The connectivity that it present through every DLC creates a cohesive, immersion-boosting product that adds several hours of playtime to the game. With some of the best quests and cast of characters in the Fallout series, the Fallout New Vegas DLCs must be experienced by both veterans and newcomers to the Fallout universe.
