Fallout New Vegas Needs a 2024 Remaster

Fallout: New Vegas in 2024 Mojave Wasteland

Consistently rating high on lists of favorite games, Fallout New Vegas is a legend in the gaming community. With a great story, interesting characters, and captivating gameplay, it stands head and shoulders above many of its peers in the RPG space. Even within the Fallout series, New Vegas is often cited as particularly special and a true modern classic. Despite this, it has begun to show its age fourteen years from release. Between glitches, crashes, and other engine limitations, fan mods have only done so much. People who seek a vanilla experience are often left with a less-than-stellar ride. 2024 is the time for Fallout New Vegas to get a remaster.

We’re Lucky We Have It At All

Video game development can be a tricky thing. While many details of the process are hard to analyze from a layman’s perspective, one thing is easy to understand: A short dev cycle. It was turned around in eighteen months. Due to the utilization of Fallout 3‘s core engine and many of its assets, certain aspects of development were expedited. However, it is a simple fact of life that more time can lead to a better product. Fallout New Vegas had a notoriously buggy launch period that was only corrected after a series of patches. While the developers are proud of their work, the truth remains that we are lucky the game came out as good as it did.

An Older Era

Fallout New Vegas was the last breath of Bethesda’s work with the Gamebryo engine. While Obsidian was using Fallout 3‘s leftovers to make New Vegas, Bethesda was working on the Creation Engine for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. This engine has served as the underpinnings for Bethesda’s work ever since, also being the engine for Fallout 4 and Starfield. Because of this shift, updates that have happened to the nearly-as-old Skyrim and Fallout 4 haven’t been possible for Fallout New Vegas. It doesn’t have access to Bethesda’s internal mod browser or the addition of paid mods developed by hired community members. In this way, New Vegas feels left behind.

Fan Interest

A quick look at the fan community shows that interest in a revisit to Fallout New Vegas is high. Many mods for Fallout 4 add in items and elements of New Vegas, but it doesn’t stop there. At least two major fan projects are working on remaking New Vegas in Fallout 4’s engine. One seeks to provide an updated version of the map for players to explore, while another seeks to completely recreate Fallout New Vegas‘ story and NPCs. While Bethesda could wait for fans to make the game for them, it should be clear that there is money in producing a remaster themselves. Allowing fans to do the work for them is money left on the table.

Final Thoughts

When Microsoft purchased Bethesda, an interesting reality came true: Bethesda and Obsidian were under the same roof. It was now up to Microsoft to make the big decisions about what happens with Fallout, and the studios that collaborated to make Fallout New Vegas were under their umbrella. It is unclear whether New Vegas ought to receive a simple remaster or an entire remake in Bethesda’s newer engine. Beyond updated graphics, making the game run better and be less glitch-prone is something the fans are eager for. With the popularity of Fallout on the rise, the time has never been better to revisit the Mojave Wasteland and Courier Six.
