Fate/EXTRA Record Teaser Announced Bold, Cinematic Sci-Fi RPG

Fate/EXTRA Record

Developer TYPE-MOON studio BB and publisher TYPE-MOON finally debuted another teaser for Fate/EXTRA Record, a remake of the PlayStation Portable hit Fate/EXTRA, which released back in 2010 in Japan and 2011 in North America. Showcased in a recent stream, the studio gave the briefest of glimpses at its upcoming project, with the promise of more information to come. The studio then uploaded the teaser to its official channel, increasing the anticipation for this new take on a PSP favorite.

Fate/Extra RECORD is another property that takes place in TYPE-MOON studio BB’s “Extraverse,” the fan name for the science-fiction alternate timeline of the Fate series. The original Fate/EXTRA, as well as the Fate/EXTRA CCC companion game, helped inspired an anime called Fate/EXTRA Last Encore. In the Fate/EXTRA timeline, events coincide with Fate/stay night, up until the 70s, during which an event causes the Fate/EXTRA world to start losing its mana.

Much of the series takes place in an area known as the Moon Cell, which creates a combatant arena within the Serial Phantasm, so Servants can compete in a tournament similar to the Holy Grail War.

The trailer shows off the game’s thee playable servants that you can choose from at the start of the game. You’ll decide between the Saber, Archer, or Caster. The trailer also gives a glimpse of several of the other Master and Servant duos you’ll encounter during the game. Though this small teaser is more of a stylized anime trailer, we can still see some glimpses of the revamped graphics, which definitely follow in the footsteps of Fate/Samurai Remnant in terms of polish.

The Wait For Fate/EXTRA Record

Fans have been waiting for more information about Fate/EXTRA Record for several years, since the game debuted with an announcement in 2020. In 2022, TYPE-MOON studio BB released a longer Japanese trailer that showed more of the game. Since that trailer, information slowed to a trickle, little word from the studio on an English release date. Thankfully, the recent teaser confirmed that the project is well on its way for North American localization.

The only thing left to be determined is a solid release window, though the trailer gives no indication of a window, merely a hint as to when we’ll get more information about the game. If Fate/EXTRA Record follows a similar release pattern as previous titles in the series, the Japanese release will come six months to a year before the North American localization. Companies like Aksys, XSEED, and Koei Tecmo have previously brought Fate games to the West, so we’ll have to see who helms the project this time around.

Familiar Faces Onboard

Fans of the original 2010 Fate/EXTRA can breathe easy knowing there are a few familiar faces behind the helm of Fate/EXTRA Record. For starters, Kazuya Nino, the director and planner of the remake at TYPE-MOON studio BB, was the producer on Fate/EXTRA and previously worked on games like Etrian Odyssey. Also, TYPE-MOON was responsible for the original PSP release, bringing an extra level of confidence to the project.

Despite the lack of concrete information, the initial 2020 announcement stated that the game was in development for modern consoles, meaning that, like Fate/Samurai Remnant, players can likely anticipate this title coming to PS5 and the Xbox Series line of consoles. We can expect more information to drop on August 4th, 2024, during the FGO Fes. 2024 event, a massive annual celebration of all things Fate/Grand Order.
