Celebrating the 20th anniversary of its massive multi-media franchise, TYPE-Moon has announced that their 2004 visual novel Fate/stay Night will be receiving a remastered release, depicting the original grand tale of the Holy Grail War. Fate/Stay Night REMASTERED will be released digitally worldwide via the Nintendo Switch eShop and Steam later this week on August 8 for $29.99.
Fate/Stay Night’s Journey of Heroism
The 17-year-old Shirou Emiya Pines becomes a hero, and a surprise assault from the Irish warrior Cu-Chulain sets him on a path to granting his desire. To fend off his attacker, he accidentally summons a being known as a Servant- A hero from Earth’s history who will fight for him. The mysterious Saber, who, unlike Cu-Chulain, has a true identity that no one can uncover, acts as Shirou’s Servant to help him grant his wish- Literally. Shirou has to face off against numerous other Servants and their Masters in a battle across his hometown known as the Holy Grail War, and only if he wins this war will he have any wish he craves granted.
What does it mean to be a hero? Does it mean to simply conquer evil by force? Maybe it means to stay true to your ideals in spite of cynicism. It could even mean protecting those that you care about above all else. Fate/Stay Night aims to find answers to this question, in which Emiya’s ideals will inevitably come into conflict with the world around him. The choices the player makes throughout the story will determine the ending they receive, and with three main endings (in addition to a number of bad endings), the answer to this existential question is varied and nuanced.
The Bone of Localization
The original Fate/Stay Night, despite being one of the most influential visual novels of all time, never received an official English translation. This may surprise some, as the Fate franchise that it spawned is very popular worldwide. However, until now, the only way English-speaking fans could play the game without learning another language was through unofficial fan-made translations. One cannot understate how unfortunate it is that such a landmark title could remain so inaccessible for so long.
Luckily, with Fate/Stay Night REMASTERED, the game will be available to play in English with a new official translation. While the quality of this translation remains to be seen, it will undoubtedly make the game far easier for players to pick up and enjoy. TYPE-Moon has confirmed that the game will feature English subtitles and interface while maintaining the Japanese voiceover. In addition to English, this remaster will also include a simplified Chinese translation. Needless to say, the presence of a brand-new translation is a major selling point for those who lack the technical know-how to use fan translations.
Is this Fate/Stay Night’s Holy Grail?
Fate/Stay Night is known for having a wide variety of ports to various platforms. REMASTERED happens to be based on the PlayStation Vita Realta Nua version of the game from 2012, which features updated graphics, remixed music, and an opening by the anime studio Ufotable, who are known for making anime adaptations of the game. Like most versions of Fate/stay Night to have been released following the original, the heavier sexual content is also not present. Overall, the PlayStation Vita release is solid enough to warrant being used as the basis of this port.
It remains to be seen how this new version for Nintendo Switch and Steam differs from the PlayStation Vita port on which it is based. Fans will likely have a specific version that they prefer, and whether or not REMASTERED ends up becoming a popular version remains to be seen. For those who have not played the original game, barring any extreme problems, REMASTERED is likely going to be a solid place to jump into the game. Regardless of version, Fate/Stay Night is a solid entry point to the Fate franchise as well, and Fate/stay Night REMASTERED will easily be the most accessible entry point.
