One of gaming’s most legendary composers isn’t stopping with his latest work. The most iconic Final Fantasy music creator, Nobuo Uematsu, has slowed his creative work in recent years. Having recently partnered with his former collaborator Hironobu Sakaguchi to create the game FANTASIAN Neo Dimension, his work has continued to touch gamers worldwide. Having previously announced this as his final game soundtrack, many worried he was finally retiring. At his age, this was sadly understood and somewhat expected. However, with some clarification he has provided, we now know that there are more Uematsu masterpieces to come in the gaming world.
A True Icon
As a former employee of Square-Enix, Uematsu cut his teeth composing for the Final Fantasy franchise. Since the first game, the most iconic songs from the franchise have largely come from his work. While he has collaborated throughout his time with the series, the soundtrack of the first nine games is widely considered his artistic legacy. Since he departed from Square-Enix, he has worked on other franchises while also contributing tracks to Square-Enix games like the main theme of Final Fantasy VII Remake, Hollow. Gamers had widely assumed he would not compose a full soundtrack again, and that does seem to be the case. However, it’s not all bad news for fans of Uematsu’s work.
Clarifying Post
In a post on X, Uematsu clarified his intentions after the release of Fantasian. He says he is “not retiring from video game music work.” He will likely not produce an entire soundtrack by himself ever again, but he wants to focus on making “the music [he wants] to make.” He calls out a singular theme song as an example of the work he would like to do, something he has already done with recent Final Fantasy titles.
This is a relief for those who hoped he would continue to contribute to the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy’s conclusion as he has done with the first two entries. With promises of more work to come, worried gamers can set aside concerns and eagerly await his next musical foray.
Final Thoughts
There comes a time in every creative person’s life when they will finally retire. Many believed with his age and health concerns that Uematsu may have reached that point. His lack of presence on Final Fantasy concert tours in places like LA, California has worried many in recent years. Despite these signs, however, he seems eager to work. The popularity of his songs continues to the present, and every new piece joins his legacy of work.
With his songs often headlining trailers for games, they become a part of the iconography of these titles in a way that can’t be understated. The fan community will collectively look forward to his contributions to future projects, both in the Final Fantasy series and beyond.
