The never-ending cycle of drama surrounding the potential of a Final Fantasy IX Remake continued on Monday, April 7. For years, fans have been wishing for and anticipating an announcement regarding the Final Fantasy IX Remake that was originally leaked nearly 5 years ago. Ever since, Final Fantasy fans have been trying to take up any piece of evidence they can to predict a future release. Last week, a new website by Square Enix was established in honor of IX’s anniversary. Today, Square Enix once again teased fans, and the hysteria has started anew.
Final Fantasy IX Remake Gains Even More Traction
Back in 2021, an infamous leak announced a slew of new games reportedly coming out in the future. As it turned out, almost every game on the list thus far has been accurate. One of the only glaring holdouts left, Final Fantasy IX Remake, was present but has yet to have an official announcement regarding confirmation. Since that time, other reported leakers have continued to state that the game is in development, but nothing has come from Square Enix.
Last week, fans began to get excited again after Square Enix seemed to tease a possible future remake announcement. The RPG behemoth set up a new Final Fantasy IX website that was in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the game. The website alone could mean more is coming, but with updated logos and character designs, fans became very excited. The ramped-up sales for merchandise also seemed like a possible bigger announcement indicator. However, nothing actually came from Square Enix, which just added to the roller coaster of emotions fans have gone through.
The Tease On Social Media
On April 7, Fans were again treated to a tease by the Square Enix company. On their official social media pages, including X, they posted a clear reference to Final Fantasy IX. The post reads “If you know, you know” captioned on an image of the famous quote from the game, “My memories will be part of the sky”. This is a reference to the ending of the game and is meant to evoke some sort of emotion.
To be clear, this is not an announcement or confirmation of anything. On its own, it means very little. Even when combined with other evidence, it is still only circumstantial. However, it could very well be a build-up to something. Perhaps it is simply all a marketing ploy for the website and sale of merchandise. Nevertheless, the teasers certainly have fans talking, and that is really what Square Enix wants more than anything else.
Final Thoughts
Final Fantasy IX is one of the more popular entries in an iconic franchise, and fans have had their sights set on a remake for years. The more circumstantial information that keeps coming out, the more excited fans are getting. As they say, where there is smoke, there is often fire. Until Square Enix actually says it, though, nothing can be written in stone.
The development company may be leading the fandom on, but that does not solidify facts. A remake being announced would be exciting and certainly bring a lot of hype, but until it is that time, we simply have to wait and keep hoping. Dreams can still bring enjoyment, but that is all this amounts to right now.
