Five Nights at Freddy’s, or FNAF, is one of the largest gaming franchises ever. Millions of gamers worldwide are attached to these games full of haunted animatronics and deep, hidden lore. At nearly ten years old, this series maintains an active fanbase full of art, videos, and a variety of other media coverage. A movie based on the franchise was produced and released in theaters on October 27, 2023, and a second movie is due in Winter 2025. Fans keep coming back for more, but why is that?
The History Of Five Nights At Freddy’s
August 8, 2014, kickstarted this iconic franchise with the release of the first game: Five Nights at Freddy’s. This game instantly became a smash hit and was boosted by many large content creators such as Markiplier and Pewdiepie. Since then, ten games (including FNAF World and Ultimate Custom Night) have been released, 31 books and guides, and many collaborations with various creators and games. Scott Cawthon, the creator of the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise, has become a popular figure within the community due to his unique story-telling abilities. After all, FNAF would be nothing without his creative genius backing it.
Over the years, an immeasurable amount of art, fanfiction, and video projects have been produced by the FNAF fanbase. Many fan-made games based on Five Nights at Freddy’s premise have also been created, the most notable being Five Nights At Treasure Island and the upcoming Jr’s. The insane talent of the fanbase and their obvious passion for the series has undeniably spread FNAF‘s image far and wide. MatPat, the former host of the YouTube channel Game Theory, further popularized the games with his in-depth lore speculation videos. These videos have garnered millions of views worldwide.
Nostalgia Brings Old Players Back
If you are below the age of 30, you probably know what Five Nights at Freddy’s is. Although the franchise hasn’t reached the notoriety of other popular titles like Minecraft or Call of Duty, FNAF is a staple in many younger peoples’ childhoods. Most Gen Z can recognize Freddy Fazbear from just a glance, but even if you aren’t within the younger crowd, there is a good chance you’ve seen a brown animatronic bear with a black tophat and bowtie. Many fans of the game hold a deep, sentimental attachment to it. It is even considered by some to be a cult classic among younger people.
Future Of The Franchise
News about FNAF is still hot as the game’s tenth anniversary approaches fast. Today, a collaboration between Five Nights at Freddy’s and Dead By Daylight, another popular gaming franchise, has been confirmed. This collab will be released in the Summer of 2025. As stated previously, a second movie is also arriving in 2025. A handful of new books will be released later in the fall to celebrate ten years of FNAF. Not much is known about the content of these upcoming releases, however in typical Scott Cawthon fashion, expect some lore and hidden easter eggs to uncover. The Five Nights at Freddy’s series is not ending anytime soon and will keep producing new content for years to come.
