FNAF Secret of The Mimic Shows Off Creepy Mimic Design

Five Nights At Freddy's FNAF Secret of the Mimic

A new trailer for the latest installment in the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise, FNAF Secret of the Mimic, along with a playable demo and all-out booth design at the PAX West convention last week, have been touting the titular Mimic’s creepy design.

What We Know About FNAF Secret of the Mimic So Far

As the next mainline installment in the series, the game focuses on the character The Mimic, a primary antagonist in the Tales from the Pizzaplex spinoff novel series, as well as FNAF: Security Breach‘s RUIN DLC. From all available evidence, the Mimic and a jack-in-the-box-style clown character Jackie appear to be one and the same, with Jackie likely an animatronic costume being controlled by the mimic. A life-sized Jackie model was on prominent display at the FNAF booth at PAX West, and the character features in the teaser trailer dropped at the beginning of August. Reports from the playable demo at PAX West confirm Jackie’s predominance as one of the game’s main villains.

The game also appears to take place in a toy factory, possibly one used to create attractions for Fall Fest, an event and location teased in Help Wanted and Help Wanted 2. The demo contains mascot suits from the Mimic’s room in the RUIN DLC, as well as posters showing several new animatronic characters.

In the short demo, players reportedly release Jackie as part of a puzzle to unlock the first door. A few puzzles later, Jackie begins trashing the player’s current location, forcing them to flee. A chase sequence then ensues, forcing the player through parts of the Fall Fest factory, an elevator, and a series of vents, while Jackie attempts to grab them before collapsing a vent and ending the demo. All in all, it sounds like a short, action-packed first look at another solid entry in the series.

The game is slated to be released sometime in 2025 for PSVR2.

Who Is The Mimic?

The established lore for the Mimic is as twisted and convoluted as anything in the franchise. Created by Fazbear Entertainment board member and engineer, Edwin Murray, the Mimic was designed as a kind of nanny for Edwin’s young son, David. David’s mother died giving birth to him, leaving Edwin as the sole caregiver and breadwinner. To ensure that David received the attention he required, Edwin created the Mimic1 code, designed to learn through observation. This code allowed the Mimic, built from spare parts and half-completed machines, to absorb behavioral traits and patterns. At first, it mimicked its charge, David, taking on a playful, childlike quality.

Unfortunately, David would later die after being struck by a car. In his grief, Edwin Murray assaulted the Mimic, beating it with a metal rod until it stopped functioning. In doing so, Edwin inadvertently taught the Mimic violence and agony. When the Mimic is reactivated by Fazbear technicians, it puts its newly acquired skills to use, going on a variety of killing sprees and utilizing a changing roster of gruesome tactics each time.

What murderous antics developers Steel Wool Studios have in mind for the character is anyone’s guess, but this new installment may serve to unify some of the far-reaching lore spread across the FNAF universe.
