Fortnite FPS Mode Will be Available Soon

Epic has officially opened the Fortnite FPS mode for testing. Fortnite is a battle royale shooter, an arena shooter, a racing game, a rhythm game, a survival game, and soon enough it would be a First Person Shooter. Although the Fortnite FPS mode is still in its experimental stages, the animations look pretty good. And from the looks, Epic is planning to make the Fortnite FPS mode a stand-alone title. And if it shows potential to grow in popularity, the FPS mode would be here to stay.

The new First Person Camera Mode enables you to create polished first-person experiences rendered from the player character’s viewpoint! As Epic has officially opened up testing for the “First Person Camera Mode” in Fortnite, players can now use it in the creative mode in Fortnite and in the UEFN (Unreal Editor for Fortnite). Although players are not able to publish levels in the first person, that will be available when the module enters the beta stage later this year.

As regular Fortnite players already know, creators are using camera trickery to “emulate” first-person views in Fortnite to often good results, but the official Fortnite FPS mode implementation by Epic takes everything to a whole other level. While the Fortnite FPS mode looks promising, it’s quite too early to release, as not all animations have been included, and not all have been perfected.

Fortnite FPS Mode’s Minor Issues and Other Details

“All ranged weapons… are usable in first-person but not all weapons currently have custom reload animations in first-person. When dual-wielding weapons, the camera will automatically switch to third-person… Not all player actions are available in first-person… [When] swimming, gliding, and skydiving, the camera will automatically switch to third-person… Some actions may cause the player’s hands or weapon to be hidden.
Shadows are missing, and in some situations, you may notice rendering imperfections like clipping,” says Epic in their blog post.

With that said Epic still hopes for Fortnite creators to use the tool to make “islands in popular genres like first-person, team-based, or tactical shooter games, or add new levels of immersion into horror and cinematic adventure games (like Elder Scrolls).” Epic admits that because the Fortnite FPS mode is an Experimental feature, it currently comes with a few limitations. They also say that there may not be backward compatibility for assets used in the Experimental stages.

It’s clear from Epic’s blog post that supporting first-person is a manual process—new animations have to be made for new guns and tools going forward. And that’s quite a lot as the studio is already dedicated to creating Lego and Fall Guys versions of regular Fortnite skins. The thing is the Fortnite FPS mode still has a ways to go, as even with custom animations, it still feels more like a mod than a full-fledged FPS. Gun skins and character arms don’t look so great close up and all of that.

Epic has a lot of homework to do regarding the Fortnite FPS mode, and they plan on doing it all since they’ll continue to polish the first-person implementation as they work towards the Beta release. They also failed to remember an important aspect, relying on user feedback to improve.
