It’s an end of an era within the world of video game journalism. Officials with Game Informer announced that GameStop is closing it down after 33 years of bringing the latest and greatest news surrounding video games. While the exact reasoning has not been given for this turn of events, there is one fact that holds true. Those who have worked tirelessly to bring information and entertainment to video game enthusiasts have created a long-lasting legacy.

With a heavy heart, Game Informer released an official goodbye message to all of the company’s loyal readers and watchers. It summarizes the hard work that people have put in for over three decades and ends with a true goodbye. That part of the statement reads, “While our presses may stop, the passion for gaming that we’ve cultivated together will continue to live on.” The message is being met with fans of all the magazines and videos who are mourning the loss of this goliath in the world of gaming journalism.
Since 1991, when FuncoLand owned it and not GameStop, those with Game Informer have worked seemingly around the clock. This work spanned from it’s first ever issue with Sonic the Hedgehog on the cover, to the final issue covering Dragon Age: The Veilguard and more. Apart from physical and digital magazines, Game Informer also pumped out consistent videos on its YouTube channel. The comments under the latest video titled “We’re Delightfully Baffled by Squirrel with a Gun” are also being met with fans saying their own goodbyes.
The Impact of the Sudden Shutdown
The closing appears to have been a surprise to employees. Kyle Hilliard, the magazine content director for Game Informer, is expressing his frustration with the situation. He says the cover for the next magazine was about 70% completed, but it seems the public will never see it. Alex Van Aken, leader of Game Informer’s video team, says he is heartbroken. Their sentiments are likely shared by all the people who are impacted by suddenly being losing their jobs like this. This includes the people that Aken says didn’t even know it was happening.
It is currently unclear why exactly GameStop decided on suddenly shutting down the longest-running video game magazine in the United States, but more information is likely to come. There’s always a chance GameStop will make a statement regarding the reasoning. More Employees like Hilliard and Aken might also take to social media as well to express their heartache as they look for new employment. Until then, loyal fans are left in a state of confusion.
