Gears of War is a beloved third-person shooter that has spawned many great sequels, two prequels, and the upcoming prequel: Gears of War E-Day. After 2019’s Gears 5, it’s time for a blast to the past to where it all started with Gears of War E-Day.
The History Surrounding Gears of War
Before E-Day
In the Gears of War lore, E-Day, which is an abbreviation for Emergence Day, kickstarted the human-locust war that ravaged the planet of Sera. Before E-Day and the locust war, there already was a vicious war being waged on Sera called The Pendulum Wars. Both factions consist of the Coalition of Ordered Governments or COG for short, and the Union of Independent Republics, or UIR for short.
Both sides waged war for over 80 years over control of the vast fuel source inside the planet: Imulsion. After almost a century of bloody conflicts, the war ended when Adam Fenix created the infamous Hammer of Dawn for the COG. After such a display of firepower, the UIR knew they were severely outgunned, at last, they surrendered, and The Pendulum Wars ended. This could be a great intro or potential DLC content for Gears of War E-Day as this could show that the world of Sera never truly saw peace.
Emergence Day
However, the peace that Sera hoped for in the aftermath of the war was short-lived. After a few weeks following the surrender of the UIR, almost all major cities and territories for both factions were suddenly invaded by an unknown force that came from underground. This nightmare of a day has come to be known as Emergence Day. The enemy force, the Locust, came from the underground, wreaking havoc among the populace of Sera, catching the military troops for both factions off guard and unprepared.
Despite the COG having the upper hand in weaponry and tactics, they were no match for locust hordes’ sheer ferocity, unusual and unpredictable tactics, and creatures by their side. In a final act of desperation, the COG ordered that all major cities be completely incinerated with the Hammer of Dawn to deny the locusts control over the human territories. Effectively turning the entire planet of Sera into a wasteland.
E-Day throughout the series
E-Day throughout the series has been somewhat shrouded in mystery and for the most part, left up to the player’s interpretation. The subject of E-Day mostly consisted of side conversations between characters along with their own experiences. Collectables detailing events from that day either vaguely or in great detail, as well as flashbacks. Gears of War E-Day has a great opportunity to tie everything together coherently for a great narrative.
However, there are a couple of playable sections throughout the series that take place during or shortly after E-Day. For instance, Raam’s Shadow DLC for Gears of War 3 has the player play as General Raam from the first game, as well as Lieutenant Kim and his squad. This DLC takes place shortly after E-Day when the Locust have developed a strategy where they use the Kryll and other creatures to spread black ink in the sky to prevent the COG from being able to use the Hammer of Dawn.
There is a brief section at the beginning of Gears of War 4, which takes place during E-Day where you play as COG soldiers being led by Kim who was a Corporal at this time. The sheer chaos and confusion perfectly capture the nightmare of that day. Gears Tactics takes place shortly after E-Day as well. The setting takes place during the Hammer of Dawn strikes ordered by Chairman Prescott to deny the locust control on the surface. There are many tales of that day, there are many stories of inspiration for Gears of War E-Day, and who knows where the story will take us. The Coalition will try their best to keep the fanbase happen after taking over from Epic Games, Gears of War E-Day will be the game to do it.
Gears of War E-Day
Given how this day was handled throughout the series, what can we expect from this title? There were many aspects of the world of Sera before the Locust War that this game could focus on. It could be a great opportunity to play as multiple different characters and see what they were doing on E-Day. We could see Marcus and Dom return home from their deployment following the end of The Pendulum Wars, only to be thrown right into the middle of the E-Day invasion.
We could follow Baird while he was leading his former unit and Cole, fresh out of training after leaving his athletic career for military service. Not to mention the many other important characters such as Colonel Hoffman and Anya Stroud, the possibilities and countless stories are endless. Fans feared that the direction of the series was heading in a direction that could’ve ended badly but this announcement reassured all of us that Gears of War still remembers why it was so beloved long ago. Gears of War E-Day could have a diversive narrative that can show players the true extent of the chaos that E-Day brought onto the world.
Departing Thoughts
Gears of War E-Day was announced on the ninth of June, 2024 during the Xbox Games Showcase event. It garnered many reactions, many of which were positive considering that not only were we going back to the age of the Locust War but we were heading to the day where it all began. As of right now, there’s no wishlist available for it but that may change soon as the months continue. For now, it’s high time to get your gears on and protect what’s left of humanity
