Ghostface found his way to the world of Dead by Daylight on June 19th, 2019. While not one of the strongest killers in the game, The Ghost Face is one of the more fun characters to enjoy. Some may not know that this Ghostface is technically an original character. The mask and costume may be familiar but the person underneath is the creation of BHVR’s writers. What can be known about the one behind the mask? Does he have a favorite scary movie?
Ghostface in Dead by Daylight
Copywrite holders are usually film studios (in the case of Michael Myers), a production company, or some other entity. This means there are a lot of restrictions as to what can and cannot be done with a character. BHVR did not have to do that with Ghostface.
BHVR contacted Fun World, the copywrite holder of the Scream mask. Permission was granted to use the mask in-game. This meant Ghostface could come to the world of Dead by Daylight with few restrictions. This decision also granted BHVR the ability to craft a brand-new Ghostface of their choosing from a different universe. No mention of Sidney Prescott, Billy Loomis, or any other character was needed. Enter Danny Johnson.
While the first Scream hit theaters in 1996, Danny Johnson lived in Florida in 1993. A freelancer for the local newspaper, Johnson worked under the pseudonym of Jed Olsen. While a stranger in Roseville, FL, Olsen was able to get a job based on his love of “good old American values.” This was all despite his portfolio showing his moves from small town to small town across the US. He never stayed anywhere for too long. The paper was just too desperate to ask.
Five months later, people began dying in Rosewood with no leads. Local law enforcement was left perplexed by the nature of these crimes. Very few things were known. The killer enjoyed stalking his victims from afar and snapping photos of their homes to learn the layout. Eventually, the killer, wearing a white mask, would strike. He was dubbed “The Ghost Face.” Olsen’s job was to interview the victim’s family and police.
After weeks of wreaking havoc in Roseville, Olsen left a note on his work desk: “I hope you liked my stories–I enjoyed bringing them to life. Don’t worry, I’m not done.” –Jed Olsen. Johnson admired the work hanging on the wall. Article after article written by himself and others lined the wall. Moments later, Johnson felt the room turn colder. The floor under his feet turned to dead leaves. A woman screamed in the distance and Johnson knew he would enjoy himself. The Ghost Face was now in The Realm.
Ghostface’s Power and Gameplay
Night Shroud is the power given to Ghostface by The Entity. Ghostface becomes undetectable, losing both Terror Radius and Red Stain. While in this state, Johnson can stalk survivors until the survivor is Marked. When Marked, survivors are exposed, leaving them vulnerable to one-hit downs. Survivors can break Night Shroud by catching an extended sight of Johnson. This includes survivors who are currently hanging on a hook, so be mindful of Johnson’s position when using his power.
Ghostface’s play style requires patience as he is an M1 killer. He cannot throw or shoot something at survivors like the Huntress or the Deathslinger. He does not have a speed/lung ability like Wesker or Blight. Stick to the corners, the bushes, and other areas off in the distance to watch and Mark survivors. Use the lean ability to Mark survivors faster than normal.
Ghostface will need to use Night Shroud best to get the quick kill. When Marking a survivor, get the meter built up to 99%, get as close as you can to the survivor without being seen, quickly finish Marking the survivor, and attack. It takes 30 seconds to build the meter giving the player plenty of time to Mark and sneak up on an unsuspecting Survivor.
Ghostface Perks and Add-Ons
Ghostface has three teachable perks in Dead by Daylight: Thrilling Tremors, Furtive Chase, and I’m All Ears. While these perks are no longer great by modern Dead by Daylight standards, each one is still useful on certain killers of the game.
Furtive Chase: Each time a killer hooks the Obsession, the killer is given the following benefits for 14/16/18 seconds: Granted the Undetectable (the killer’s terror radius disappears) and +5% Haste speed boost. I’m All Ears: Any Survivor performing a Rushed Vault within 48 meters of your location triggers I’m All Ears. The Aura of that Survivor is revealed to the killer for 6 seconds. The perk has a cool-down of 60/45/30 seconds.
Trilling Tremors: After picking up a down survivor Thrilling Tremors is activated. The Entity blocks all generators not currently being repaired for 16 seconds. All generators being blocked turn white. This perk has a cooldown of 100/80/60 seconds.
Ghostface has 20 different add-ons to use while in the Trials. Picking which one might be best to use on him could be a little tricky. Here are the best perks to use when you play as Ghostface. “Philly”: This perk decreases the time required to Mark a Survivor by 20%. It should go without saying why this is the best add-on of the bunch. The faster you can Mark a survivor, the quicker you can down them. The best part is this is a Brown add-on. This makes it one of the more common add-ons one will receive in the Bloodweb. This is the best add-on available to this killer.
“Ghostface Caught on Tape”: An iridescent add-on that gives Ghostface his power back after downing a survivor. Iridescent add-ons are more difficult to find in the Bloodweb. Use “Philly” to Mark Survivors faster and this to get Night Shroud back after downing someone.
“Walleye’s Matchbook”: This brown add-on shortens power cooldown to just 14 seconds. This perk gives you more opportunities to stalk or use stealth if you are exposed during a chase. Works well with most of the other add-ons. “Orsen’s Wallet”: Gives Ghostface his power back after breaking a pallet or a wall. This perk is useful when a map is dense with pallets or breakable walls. This add-on works very well with “Philly.”
Ghostface may have been in the game for five years but BHVR is not ignoring him. In the 8.1.0 update “I’m All Ears” received a buff. Ghostface receives new cosmetics now and again (Scary Movie mask, Golden Cat mask). One might even find one of his Dead by Daylight masks in a costume shop this Halloween. Now, if only we could know his favorite scary movie.
