God of War has been one of the most successful series for Sony Interactive Entertainment and Santa Monica Studios. The original trilogy focused on Greek mythology and has been remastered many times for different platforms. The franchise has recently expanded by focusing on Norse mythology, the most recent being a re-release of Ragnarok in 2024. Fans are eager to hear what the next game will focus on. According to a recent rumor, the studio may be going the prequel route, focusing on a young Kratos.
God of War Going The Prequel Route?
Rumors have already been swirling about the next game. Because the studio ventured into Norse mythology, the rumors have been about what mythology they will go into next. Some have reported the game would be traveling to Egypt, but a new report has refuted that, saying we are heading back to Greece. During a recent episode of Insider Gaming Weekly, Tom Henderson claimed he received a tip saying the Egypt rumor is false and the new title will be going back to the setting of the original trilogy.
Henderson went on to elaborate on the rumor. Apparently, the next God of War will feature a younger Kratos and focus on his complicated relationship with his father, Zeus. This could suggest a further fleshing out of the original trilogy or a reboot of some sort. Obviously, we don’t have many details, considering all of this is based on an unconfirmed source. However, considering the success of the original trilogy, it makes sense that there is a desire to return to that storyline.
A Good Move?
Many fans were excited about the Egypt rumor for God of War. Many fans of the series were looking forward to interacting with many of the well-known Egyptian gods. However, Sony may want to tap into the nostalgia that many fans had when the game was released 20 years ago. Nostalgia is a powerful tool that many studios have successfully leveraged to their benefit. Is it a good move to go the prequel route? Until the studio puts out a stinker in the franchise, I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.
All of their games have been critically acclaimed. Many of the games have received near-perfect scores from many of the top reviewers in the industry. Fans love the gameplay, which has gotten better with every new installment. It is interesting the studio is looking to reopen the Greece storyline, given the fantastic ending of the third one. Rumors will continue to swirl until the studio gives us something concrete. What do you think? Were you more excited about the God of War Egypt rumor or a return to Greece?
