GTA San Andreas (2004) – Reviewing an All time Classic Game

There are only a handful of games that make it to the list of great games and even fewer that go a step further and enter the list of the all time greatest. The position of GTA San Andreas, a game that was first released all the way back in 2004, in such a list might be debated by some. What is beyond dispute however is the status of this action-adventure open-world game as one of the greatest the medium has ever produced.

So it was little surprise that Rockstar, the game’s developer decided to release a Definitive Edition, just a few years ago, combining GTA San Andreas with Vice City and GTA III. Whilst the reviews for the latest game were a mixed bag, what is beyond dispute is the household name the original San Andreas holds in the minds of gamers and gaming critics alike. In this post, we will analyze a few of the reasons why this game is so good.

GTA San Andreas – An Open World Game with Great Freedom

Tremendous freedom and tight gameplay. That is what you get with GTA San Andreas. A game that was released all the way back in 2004, like 2 decades ago. A game that gave players the freedom to do things that modern GTA players take for granted today, but except only generations of game consoles ago.

Released on the PlayStation 2, a console that is far surpassed by the PlayStation 5 the game did something verging on a miracle for its time. Provide expansive world-building, a deep story, faithful recreation of the 90s setting, solid gameplay for its time, and tremendous repayable value. And did I mention player freedom? It is no coincidence that IGN even went as far as to rate it the best PS2 game ever.

Many of the things that players take for granted in modern GTA games were, not exactly pioneered, but brought to a level that was close to gaming perfection, in the aged consoles and computer hardware of the day. And above, the game provided an atmosphere to the gaming world that has been hard to beat in newer releases.

GTA San Andrea – A Story of Rags to Riches

Everyone likes a rags-to-riches story. When I played the game for the first time, the idea of playing through the story of a man who is left at the bottom of the barrel, left to ride a bicycle as his first vehicle, and then having to make his way to the top, battling gangs, criminals, soldiers, friends turned enemies, all in the quest for that elusive “paper”.

The game is centered on breaking the law and doing what is necessary, including the many felonies the player-controlled character is allowed to commit, all set in a world where your actions of consequences. From the immediate arrest or hospital time to the changing landscape of the region in terms of which gang controls of how much of the territory.

In GTA San Andreas your actions have consequences. And no more so than the choices the character makes in his encounters and relationships with various personnel, all motivated by the mantra, that one must get rich or die trying.

Since the release and the awesome success of the GTA V there is has been no shortage of debate on what is the best GTA Game. The tendency to choose the latest GTA game is strong. I mean, how can anyone look past the tremendous commercial and critical success of GTA V, notably, with the immense popularity of GTA V Online? However, there is something about GTA San Andreas, a certain magic to the game that sets the title apart from the rest.

Whether it is the homie setting of the hood, the rich strip of Las Venturas the gang wars, to the big betrayal, or the countless mini-games, GTA V to its credit did match and surpass. However, GTA San Andreas has a certain magic to it that sets it apart. Whilst it does not match up to the technical achievements and online capabilities of GTA V, GTA San Andreas will also remain a game part that captured the ethos of 90s hood nearly perfectly.
