The potential release of Half-Life 3 has become a modern legend among gamers, as the mainline series has been in stasis since the release of Half-Life 2: Episode 2 in 2007. A new leak and data mine may imply that Half-Life 3 could be in production and could have had its production started as soon as the 2020 release of the VR game spinoff, Half-Life: Alyx.
The White Sands of Half-Life 3
Youtuber and Data-miner Tyler McVicker reports that a voice actor (whom he wishes to remain anonymous) listed “Project White Sands” on her website. This project was stated as being worked on for Half-Life series developer Valve and is likely an internal code name. While such internal code names could refer to any game, many fans believe it is related to Half-Life. “White Sand” is also the name of a NASA test facility located in New Mexico, the same state where Half-Life’s Black Mesa facility is found.
In addition, the voice actor removed the role from her website shortly after Half-Life fans began speculating. More recently, the entire website was taken down. Even if this is not a Half-Life project, this indicates that Project White Sand is something that Valve is holding close to its chest. This tidbit of information may not prove that Half-Life’s protagonist, Gordon Freeman’s grand return, is nigh, but other recent events may also support this.
Data Mined Information
McVicker backs up speculation for the existence of Half-Life 3 with his data mining. An earlier data mine from 2021 revealed the code name “HLX” was a project in the works by the Half-Life: Alyx team. While this was not enough evidence to conclude at the time, newer information has arisen that corroborates the idea. McVicker says that strings within the code of other Valve games depict that the main character of HLX wears an HEV Suit, much like Gordon Freeman.
In addition, other lines of code have been found referencing “xenjellyfish” and “xenswooper,” according to McVicker. These were known to be cut content from Half-Life: Alyx, yet development has continued since then. This would indicate that they are being used for a new game. Because they were originally planned for a Half-Life game, it is expected that they will be used in another Half-Life game. With Half-Life 3 being Valve’s most requested and anticipated game, it would absolutely make sense for them to use it there.
In 2018, after years of Valve focusing on endeavors other than game development, Valve CEO Gabe Newell announced that he wanted to start making games again. This was followed up by the 2020 release of the VR game Half-Life: Alyx. Valve has not stated what the Half-Life: Alyx team has been working on in the four years since its release, so the likelihood of Half-Life 3 being in production is not low. However, no definitive evidence exists, so any leaks or data mining should be taken with a grain of salt. Even so, fans who pine for the release of Half-Life 3 now have good reason to have hope.
