Bloodborne’s Hidetaka Miyazaki Treasures His “Special” Game
Bloodborne director Hidetaka Miyazaki spoke with Game Informer’s Brian Shea in December 2025 about soulslike games, namely 2015’s Bloodborne. Miyazaki referred to the game as a “special game” for him, for several reasons.
What Makes Bloodborne Special?
The first reason behind the game’s special status is the game’s “challenging development cycle,” according to FromSoftware’s perspective. The soulslike went on to be FromSoftware’s most popular title, that isn’t Dark Souls, until Elden Ring’s release in 2022.
Another reason for the game being special to Miyazaki is how the game was “personal” to him. Miyazaki said, “I’ve imparted a lot of my own ideas into this game. Whether it be the story, the world-building component, or even the game mechanics and the game systems that are in place.” The result of Miyazaki’s efforts towards the game is “perhaps the strongest reflection of my type of flavoring of a game that one can experience.”
This compliment is highly considerable, especially when considering Miyazaki’s expertise in directing several other games. While this game has a strong cult following, the game remains exclusive to the PS4. There’s no PS5 version; there’s no PC version and there’s no patch to make the game run at 60 frames per second, even with community efforts.
What about The Duskbloods?
While this year’s soulslike title, The Duskbloods, is presumably a successor to Bloodborne, little information is available regarding the Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive title. The Duskbloods is almost certainly not a sequel to the Lovecraftian soulslike.
2026 may be the year that this game sees a sequel, remake or remaster. However, former Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida warned that Miyazaki could be too “busy” to work on anything Bloodborne related. Also, Yoshida said that he “doesn’t want anyone else to touch [Bloodborne].”
Miyazaki, meanwhile, is aware of the game’s popularity. In 2024, he was “very happy” that people wanted to see a remake and acknowledged the high demand for a PC port of the Lovecraft-Meets-Dracula soulslike. The game’s popularity, and Miyazaki’s love for the game is likely what is preventing the game from getting a sequel, PC port or remaster.
Bloodborne’s Legacy

Nearly 11 years have passed since the game’s release on the PS4, and the game remains an unrivaled example of strong atmosphere thanks to Yharnam’s breathtaking scale.
On Reddit, one person commented on how Bloodborne stands out, even among other games developed by FromSoftware. They wrote:
“While every first-played Fromsoft game tends to be special, I’ve always felt Bloodborne struck the perfect balance between cryptic yet understandable world building other From games don’t always measure up to. It just feels the most cohesive to me and while I love all of their games, it just seems its core themes resonated with me the most.”
Another person commented, “Bloodborne is one of the greatest games of all time. Just absolute perfection in its combat mechanics, and the aesthetics and lore are unmatched. It’s the result of a brilliant vision executed almost flawlessly.”
About the Game
Bloodborne came out in 2015, and the game is one of the PS4’s few exclusive titles. The game became very popular due to its unique setting, the trademark FromSoftware difficulty and the lore behind various bosses such as Father Gascoigne, Vicar Amelia, Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower (from The Old Hunters DLC) and Ludwig (also from The Old Hunters DLC).
The game begins after you create a character, who leaves a laboratory and enters the city of Yharnam, which is plagued with a localized illness rapidly spreading through its streets. The world, bleak and nightmarish, is full of danger, death and madness. Your character must survive by uncovering Yharnam’s most hidden secrets.
Several reports indicate that Bloodborne has sold over 9 million copies since its release.
