Cult of the Lamb: A Sinful Twist on an Adorable Cozy Game – Weekly Indie Spotlight
Cult of the Lamb is one of the most unique indie games I’ve ever played – and given that I’ve been playing indie games for twenty years and I’ve seen a slew of creativity, that is really saying something. In this game, you play an adorable little lamb who must build up a cult, as the title suggests. Since the new Woolhaven DLC just came out, let’s take a look back at what makes Cult of the Lamb so appealing.
Cult of the Lamb: Blending the Cute with the Morbid
Developed by Massive Monster and published by Devolver Digital, who also published games such as Vampire Survivors and Ball x Pit, Cult of the Lamb uses a bright, cartoony art style and cute animal characters to make the player smile even when they’re building a cult. As you collect cult members, you can also customize their looks, so you can make them look as adorable as you want, and you might decide to sacrifice them later.
Building your cult involves plenty of cozy game vibes. You grow crops, build shelters, go fishing, craft decorations that demonstrate your power and glory, cook meals, and more. You have to keep your cult members alive and happy, or else they’ll turn against you and start preaching heresy. They might just have to be sacrificed after that. As such, you’d better give plenty of sermons to brainwash your cult members, and make sure you’ll listen to their requests so they’ll adore you. You want to be seen as a benevolent leader, after all.
You can also assign jobs to your cult members. They can farm, build, mine, or pray at the idols to generate worship points that you can use for upgrades. You can send them on missions to gather resources as well. In addition, you can perform rituals that will have different effects on your cult. Remember that anything can be useful, even the waste you gather when cleaning the outhouses.
Two Games In One

Not only do you have to build and take care of your cult, but you’ve also got to venture into the ruins to battle grotesque monsters through randomly-generated environments. The combat is fast-paced and adrenaline-pumping, with various different weapons you can pick up. You’ll quickly discover what your favorite weapons are, and you’ll be disappointed when they don’t spawn.
The ruins might also offer opportunities to grow your cult. You might find helpless animals captured by the monsters, and if you save them, they’ll be so grateful that they’ll dedicate their lives to serving you. Each run through the ruins ends in a giant boss fight, but remember that time still passes for your cult members while you’re off slaying monsters. Make sure to cook them plenty of food beforehand so they won’t go hungry while you’re gone.
The ruins might also give you blueprints for new decorations or cards that boost your stats during battle. Defeating bosses opens up new areas to visit, which bring new activities and opportunities to expand your cult. Make sure you go into battle often, especially since you will die often, and when you die, you’ll have to start from the beginning on your next run, though you’ll still maintain any cult members and items you collected during your run.
Go Buy Cult of the Lamb!
Cult of the Lamb satisfies the urge for both an adorable experience and a wicked one. As such, it’s a must-buy for any fan of cozy games, roguelikes, or both. The game is packed with content, even without the new Woolhaven DLC, and the new DLC is sure to entice many more hours of gameplay. Cult of the Lamb can be purchased on Steam for $24.99.
