Indie Dev Spotlight: Toby Fox and His Success with Undertale
This week, I wanted to write about Toby Fox, a video game developer who created one of the most viral RPG games in 2015, Undertale. I want to shine a spotlight on this incredible game, its development, and what else Toby Fox has accomplished, as well as how his work has evolved over the years.
About Toby Fox
Robert F. Fox, who goes by Toby Fox, is an American video game developer, composer, and voice actor. He began developing in the late 2000s, experimenting with RPG game-making alongside his three brothers. He also started as a forum member at the EarthBound fansite, starmen.net, under the alias Radiation, managing the website’s PK Hack until 2011.
Toby also dabbled in music and acting before coming out with his biggest RPG game, Undertale. The success of Undertale led to the development of another RPG hit, Deltarune, a following of over 2 million users on X, and getting to work on one of the biggest card and video game franchises, Pokémon, and it all really started with Undertale.
Undertale and More Works
Undertale is an RPG video game, where, as the protagonist, you fall into a world full of monsters and have to find a way out or stay in this world forever. The game recieved universal acclaim, especially with Metacritic, which got a 92 Metacritic score. Undertale was an incredible success story. Toby Fox was asked to be part of the 2018 Forbes 30 Under 30 list for creating Undertale, and at that time, the game had sold over 2 million copies.
Also in 2018, Toby Fox released another hit with Deltarune. When the first chapter came out, it was heavily compared to its predecessor; however, ironically, Toby says he drew inspiration from Deltarune when developing Undertale. Right now, Deltarune is set to have a total of seven chapters, four of which have already come out. Toby seems to have a lot planned for the next couple of years, and I’m excited to see if there’s more he’s got up his sleeve.
