Resident Evil Requiem poster with Leon and Grace

Resident Evil Requiem’s Leon and Grace Dynamic

Resident Evil Requiem is set to launch in just one month, and fans cannot wait. We know that this game will be especially special, given that it will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the franchise, bring back one of the most iconic characters of the series, and have us return to the city that started it all, Raccoon City. Resident Evil Requiem will also introduce a new character, Grace Ashcroft, as the main protagonist of this game. Her character is unique among the established cast.

She does not have much combat experience and is easily frightened, making her one of the most relatable protagonists in one of the scarier games in the series. She, alongside Leon, who is also a playable character in the game, has such a different play styles the devs have said it almost feels like playing two different games. Here’s how Leon complements Grace’s weaknesses, and how Grace offers a new perspective to play Resident Evil Requiem.

Grace and Leon’s Complete Opposite Gameplay

One thing that’s been highlighted throughout the entirety of the promotional marketing of the game is how different Leon and Grace’s gameplay is. The difference between their personalities is definitely reflected in their gameplay styles, which is what makes Resident Evil Requiem so special. Leon is known for his action-savvy nature throughout the series, so it’s pretty much what we would expect his performance to be in this installment.

From the Resident Evil showcase that premiered a couple of weeks ago, we got to see in-depth gameplay of both Grace and Leon, and the differences are stark. With Leon, we saw so much action and gore with the killing animations and what we’re able to do playing his perspective. It mirrors Resident Evil 2 and 4 gameplay, just way more bloody. I mean, we can use a freaking chainsaw and completely crush zombie heads with a roundhouse kick.

On the other hand, Grace isn’t at all an action hero; in fact, she avoids it. The devs wanted to go for a psychological horror feel while playing Grace, and that is definitely what we’re getting. It seems a lot more difficult to play Grace than Leon. In the showcase, we saw that Grace’s inventory is a lot smaller; we don’t do any of the badass killing animations that Leon does, and it seems we can’t even kill boss enemies without a little help, with Grace taking more of an investigative approach.

How Do They Both Complement Each Other?

The complete opposite gameplay of both Grace and Leon offers a cool duality to the experience of playing Resident Evil Requiem. Leon’s badassery will be a nice break from the psychological horror we’ll experience playing Grace, which, from what we saw in the demo, will be pretty scary, especially for a Resident Evil game.

With Grace, you take a more investigative approach, where you’ll want to avoid combat as much as possible. The demo showed that Grace’s fear can even affect her gameplay; the more frightened she is, the more clumsy she is to control, which is so cool and a super interesting mechanic to add to the game. It elevates the horror, something we are not used to seeing in the series; however, playing as Leon gives players a break from that horror and reminds us that, yes, this is Resident Evil you’re playing.
