Through many hit titles, The Elder Scrolls established itself as one of the largest Western RPG franchises from modern gaming. The series received acclaim for its vast open worlds and deep lore. At the saga’s heart lies the titular collection of Scrolls, often overlooked by most gamers.
The Scrolls played their largest role in the latest entry, Skyrim, with three appearances. Many fans are probably curious about which ones appeared, where to find them, and what exactly they do. Here is a breakdown of the three Scrolls in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and their role in the story.
What The Elder Scrolls Are
Before venturing forward, many readers are probably curious about what an “Elder Scroll” is. Despite serving as the titular MacGuffins at the heart of the fantasy series, the relics played a relatively minor role in most entries. The scrolls, misleadingly known as “Aedric Prophecies,” are relics of unfathomable power containing divine knowledge of the past and future.
Few items maintain the same aura of mystery as the scrolls throughout the vast lore of the franchise, as they come from neither the Aedric nor Daedric deities. At the same time, they contain boundless cosmic knowledge and insights. However, their power comes at a grave price. Reading them can cause blindness -as shown through Dawnguard– and even insanity. In the modern day, the Cult of the Ancestor Moth was founded to catalog their wisdom.
Despite their importance, the Scrolls did not appear directly for most of the early series. Their first in-game appearance was during the optional Thieve’s Guild questline during Oblivion, where the final quest involved stealing one. Afterward, the Scrolls appeared in various quests throughout the vast Elder Scrolls Online MMO, where the three factions would repeatedly battle for control over them.
The First Scroll From Skyrim
Three Elder Scrolls appear in Skyrim. In the vanilla version of the game, however, only one Elder Scroll appears. Known as “The Dragon Scroll,” this relic is necessary for the Dragonborn to learn the vital shout “Dragonrend” to defeat Alduin. The long-vanished Dwarves held the Scroll and hid it in the underground Tower of Mzark. Players must seek the aid of the College of Winterhold and the hermit Septimus Signus to find the scroll.
The Dragonborn finds a massive observatory within the tower, which the Dwarves constructed to read the scroll safely. Once the player acquires the scroll, they take it to the Throat of the World and bring it before the elder dragon, Paarthurnax. Using the relic, the Dragonborn returns to the day Alduin was banished using another scroll. Otherwise, the relic plays no further role in the story.
The Other Two From Dawnguard
During the Dawnguard DLC, two more Scrolls appear, the Sun Scroll and Blood Scroll. Players find the Sun Scroll in the possession of their main companion during the story, the vampire Serana. The Dragonborn awakens her from suspended animation while in an ancient temple. She takes the Scroll to the Dawnguard and the wise Moth Priest Dexion Evicus. He explains that two more are needed to reveal the truth and that they must be properly read in an ancient meadow.
Conveniently, the Blood Scroll is in the possession of Serana’s mother, Valerica. She stole the scroll and took it to the hellish realm of the Soul Cairn. Once the three are assembled, they reveal a prophecy regarding a powerful bow capable of blocking out the sun with its arrows, something the vampiric Lord Harkon would naturally find helpful.
Both quests demonstrate how the Scrolls could rewrite reality and why various factions coveted them. With the sixth game in the series on the way, gamers can hope the truth of these relics will be unveiled.
