How Silent Hill: Ascension Earned Its Emmy Award For Its Incredible Interactive Story

Silent Hill: Ascension

In my dreams, I see that town…Silent Hill, and how it just won an Emmy for its Interactive Story Silent Hill: Ascension!

That’s right! After the Silent Hill drought that lasted a decade (Yes, it has been a decade. P.T. came out ten years ago, and the pain of what we lost is still so heavy.) finally ended a year ago with KONAMI announcing not one, but SIX new Silent Hill titles that were actively being worked on. One of these projects was the interactive horror television series Silent Hill: Ascension developed by Genvid Entertainment and Behavior Interactive.

Genvid Entertainment CEO Jacob Navok posted to Twitter/X with a heartfelt message about the project winning the award.  “This award is a testament to the dedication of team members around the world who worked on this project for years,” Navok wrote to Twitter/X giving credit to the many team members who worked diligently. The project had more than 300 writers, artists, developers, QA testers, performers, voice actors, and editors which Navok notes are the reason this project was possible.

You can feel the pride and joy radiating from Navok as he writes, “Emmy Award-winning studio @GenvidEnt is working on its next project, DC Heroes United, which will debut later this year.” Needless to say, we are very excited to see what other projects come.

The Story of Ascension

Silent Hill: Ascension follows the story of six protagonists all in different parts of the world being tormented by manifestations of their trauma following a slew of murders. Psychological horrors can happen anywhere, and that’s what producer Motoi Okamoto set out to show with the series taking place in Pennsylvania and Norway rather than just being set in the town of Silent Hill. It was his way of making the popular title feel more akin to the psychological horror genre.

The series ran for six months with weekly episodes that allowed the audience substantial time to discuss and make decisions for the direction of the story. The most intricate part of the project was making it an interactive experience for audience members everywhere. Genvid and Behavior Interactive had to work diligently to take inspiration from other interactive media such as Netflix’s Bandersnatch and TellTale games while maintaining an open experience for those who couldn’t watch the episodes live.

The Future of Silent Hill

It’s important to remember that the last time we saw any content from Konami and Silent Hill was P.T. which was released in 2014, and before that Silent Hill Downpour and the HD Collection in 2012. There is always going to be the anxiety that Konami will cancel another project, and eventually cause another Silent Hill drought. However, with this incredible win, I think it’s safe to say that Konami finally understands and sees the love and potential for more Silent Hill content.

For now, let’s not worry about that as there are still plenty of projects for Silent Hill set to be released within the next few years. This includes the highly anticipated Silent Hill 2 Remake set to release in October of this year and the Return to Silent Hill movie based on the iconic 2001 title.

You can still watch SILENT HILL: Ascension on the website, as well as purchase merchandise for the award-winning series.
