How To Defeat The Wither In Minecraft In 2024

With its block-by-block building and beautiful landscapes to explore, Minecraft has climbed the charts over the years and has become one of the most popular video games. The Wither, one of Minecraft’s main bosses, introduces chaos to the game’s fairly calm gaming experience. Though The Wither isn’t Minecraft’s hardest boss- that title goes to The Warden- it is still one of the game’s most challenging to overcome. Defeating this boss gives the player access to the Nether Star which allows the creation of the Beacon, a powerful block that buffs the player. So, how do you kill this abomination?

First, Go To The Nether

The first step towards defeating this boss is to enter the “Hell” dimension, the Nether. You will want to find a large, dark, reddish-purple structure called the Nether Fortress. This fortress is relatively easy to loot if you have plenty of food, a shield, and iron armor or better. The fortress will spawn the fire-spewing Blaze mob, Magma Cubes, Skeletons, and Wither Skeletons. As opposed to normal Skeletons, Wither Skeletons are taller, attack with a stone sword instead of a bow and arrow, and have a charred, blackened look to symbolize their Nether origins. To spawn The Wither into your Minecraft world, you must obtain three Wither Skeleton Skulls from killing Wither Skeletons.

When killed by the player, a Wither Skeleton has a 2.5% chance to drop its skull. This chance increases when the Looting enchantment is involved. The chance is increased by 1% with each level of Looting in Java Edition up to a maximum of 5.5%. In the Bedrock edition of Minecraft, each level counts as 2% for a maximum of 8.5% with Looting III. Also found in some Nether Fortresses is the other ingredient needed to spawn The Wither called Soul Sand/Soil.  You will need four of these blocks. Soul Sand/Soil can be found in the Nether Wart fortress room or the Soul Sand Valley biome within the Nether.

To defeat The Wither, you must spawn it into your world. Ensure you are not in Peaceful Mode as this will prevent The Wither from spawning. First, clear an area and place the Soul Sand/Soil into a T formation. The Wither will not spawn if the two blocks adjacent to the base (underneath the T formation) are not Air Blocks. Then, place the three Wither Skulls atop the highest Soul Sand/Soil blocks. Once the third skull has been placed and adequate space is present, the blocks will disappear and The Wither will spawn in their place. The summoning totem can be built in any orientation as long as the skulls are placed last.

Defeating The Wither

Location is key. When summoned on the surface of your world, The Wither tends to fly away and becomes extremely difficult to kill if not properly equipped. Not to mention, it also destroys everything in its path. With this in mind, many players fight this boss underground or in a place where it can get trapped. The most common method is digging down into the Deepslate level. Create a long 2×1 tunnel with a summoning room at the end of the corridor. Once summoned, The Wither will charge up for 11 seconds until it explodes. It will be invulnerable during this phase, so this is a good time to drink potions or eat a golden apple.

When The Wither starts moving, it will be in its second phase. This phase allows it to take damage from all sources. As The Wither approaches you, walk backward in the 2×1 tunnel you’ve created and deal damage to it at the same time. As long as you stay in the smaller tunnel and don’t enter The Wither’s side, damage taken should remain minimal. Once The Wither falls below half health, it will enter its third phase and gain Wither Armor. This status repels arrows and tridents, so a sword or an axe are the best options in this phase. The Smite enchantment works against this boss due to its classification as Undead.

The Wither behaves in an extremely hostile manner, attacking everything except other Withers and Undead mobs. Each of the three heads shoots projectiles that inflict the Wither status causing damage over time. They also destroy most blocks excluding portal blocks, Bedrock, and other miscellaneous unbreakable blocks found in the Creative Inventory. This mob can move extremely fast along with flying. Although there are some inconsistencies in The Wither’s behavior between Java and Bedrock editions of the game, they are rather minor. These changes consist of different spawn/death animations, the amount of projectiles shot, weather changes, and more.

Drops And Closing Thoughts

When The Wither kills a mob, a Wither Rose is dropped in its place. If the ground beneath the fallen mob is Dirt or an equivalent, the rose will be planted, but if not, the Wither Rose will simply drop like any other loot. The roses are vulnerable to explosions. When planted, these cursed flowers will inflict whatever walks on them with Withering. This boss also drops an item called the Nether Star which is required to craft a Beacon. A Beacon, when powered with blocks of ingots, grants the player a multitude of buffs to choose from. The Wither is a tough boss to defeat, but with a few simple tricks, this demon becomes just another mob.
