How to Emote like a Pro in Borderlands 3

Emoting in Borderlands 3

Emotes are just one of the customization options offered in Borderlands 3, alongside character, weapon, and vehicle skins. Next to voice chat in games, emoting is one of the essential elements of the gamer’s vocabulary, translating their personality, play style, and emotional state into a pre-defined set of representative gestures. Taunting, celebrating, or just being weird are all valid reasons to emote in-game. From Fortnite’s default Dance Moves to Call of Duty Mobile’s obscure Pose on Em, to Borderlands 3’s own hard-to-get Marry Me, the breadth of options can be intoxicating, which means there’s something for everyone. But, before you go emoting yourself into the annals of gaming history, you’ll need to learn how to trigger them.

How to Select an Emote

Using your Borderland 3 emotes in the heat of battle is fairly straightforward. For PS4 and PS5 users, holding down the option button will pull up the emote wheel, displaying all your assigned emotes. Using your control stick, highlight the one you want to execute and press X. Xbox One requires nearly the same process: hold down the menu button to pull up the wheel, highlight with the control stick, and press A to execute. PC Users have it a little easier. Just press Z to display the wheel and use your mouse to select your favorite taunt, dance, or elaborate choreographed signaling. Switching up which emotes you’ve brought to the battlefield with you is another matter.

Default Emotes, Swapping, and Beyond

Borderlands 3 gives players four emotes by default (cheer, point, laugh, wave) but you can acquire more by looting crates, killing enemies, or buying them from Crazy Earl in Sanctuary III.  Six new emotes (Make it Rain, The Handsome, Portal, Marry Me, Crossed Arms, and The Worm) have been introduced through the various DLCs.  These choices Borderland 3 emotes can only be obtained by completing sections, accomplishing challenges, or defeating bosses found in the new content. Since Borderlands 3 came out it made getting emotes so much easier than its past games, allowing it to be accessible and more into the main game and allowing for more unique ones than generic types of emotes.

There are eighteen unique emotes in total in Borderlands 3, but you can only have four emotes equipped at once. You’ll have to head to a Quick Change station in Sanctuary to build out your ultimate Borderlands 3 emote lineup and let everyone on Pandora know just how expansive your intellectual and emotional palette truly is.
