How to Get Caviar in Stardew Valley

Caviar is one of the most valuable artisan goods in Stardew Valley. It can be used in various recipes, is a liked gift for many villagers, and can be a great source of income in the game. I’m going to go over everything you need to know about caviar in this game, from how to obtain the right fish, utilizing fish ponds, processing, and more! Let’s get started.

Understanding Caviar in Stardew Valley

Caviar is made by processing sturgeon roe in a preserves jar. It’s prized not only for its high selling price but also for its role in completing the Missing Bundle in the Abandoned JojaMart if you choose to go down the Community Center route. Producing caviar is a multiple-step process: you need to catch sturgeon, raise them in a fish pond, harvest their roe, and finally, process the roe into caviar.

Obtaining the Sturgeon

Sturgeons are found in the mountain lake during summer and winter. You can fish for them at any time of the day, but they are more likely to bite when it’s raining. The mountain lake, located north of Pelican Town, is the only place to catch sturgeon.

Using the right tools can make catching a sturgeon easier. Use an Iridium Rod, which allows you to use both bait and tackle. Bait increases fish bite rate, while tackle can help catch fish depending on the one you use. For example, the Trap Bobber reduces the chances of the sturgeon escaping. Try and be patient, catching a sturgeon can be hard!

Building and Using a Fish Pond

To build a fish pond you need 200 stone, five green algae, and five seaweed. Robin, the carpenter, constructs the pond for 5,000 gold. Place the pond in an easily accessible location on your farm to streamline the process of managing your fish. Once the fish pond is built, place your sturgeon inside. The initial pond capacity is three fish, which can be increased by completing fish pond quests. These quests often require you to gather specific items.

Producing Roe

To increase the amount of your fish your pond can hold, complete quests given by the sturgeon. These quests often require you to collect certain items like diamonds, jelly, or other fish products.  Sturgeons will start producing roe after a few days in the fish pond. Check the pond daily. Roe appears as a collectible item near the pond. Regularly harvesting it ensures a steady supply, essential for processing into caviar.

Processing Roe into Caviar

To craft a preserves jar, you need 50 wood, 40 stone, and eight coal. Once you have a preserves jar, place the sturgeon roe inside to begin the processing. Preserves jars can be crafted after reaching farming level four. Processing sturgeon roe into caviar takes 6,000 in-game minutes, equivalent to about two to three days.

Maximizing Profit and Efficiency

Caviar in Stardew Valley sells for 500 gold each. If you choose the Artisan profession, which increases the value of artisan goods by 40%, caviar sells for 700 gold. The best place to sell it is at the shipping bin, where you can maximize your profits without delay. Compared to other artisan goods, caviar has a high return on investment.

To boost your caviar production, consider adding more fish ponds to your farm. More ponds mean more sturgeon and thus more roe. Additionally, you can use several preserves jars so that roe can be processed continuously.
