How to Get the Laser Musket in Fallout 4

The many weapons of the Fallout franchise provide a wealth of options for protecting yourself in the Wasteland. Energy weapons were initially overpowered and late-game options in the original games, but Bethesda brought them into balance with other choices. This allows for many unique variations to become possible, and Fallout 4 gave us the Laser Musket. This weapon combines revolutionary style with futuristic flair. It fits perfectly in Fallout’s attempt to showcase America evolving into a post-apocalyptic environment. Let’s talk about how to get your hands on this fanciful weapon.

Early and Easy

Thankfully, the Laser Musket isn’t particularly tough to find in your Fallout 4 journey. Once you make it through the prologue and return to Sanctuary, your robot butler Codsworth will suggest you head into Concord and look for help. Doing so will run you into a raider attack on the Museum of Freedom. Defending himself from the museum’s balcony is Preston Jacobs, wielding the Laser Musket we’re looking for. Thankfully, you won’t have to take his. Once you clear the raiders out of the way, Preston will direct you to his fallen comrade outside the museum. On the individual’s body is a musket just for you along with some ammo.

Making Best Use

Fallout 4 stood out from the prior games by introducing a robust crafting system. Therefore, getting a weapon isn’t the end, but the beginning. The perk labeled “Science!” is available to those with 6 Intelligence or higher, which will allow you to create modifications for the Laser Musket. Some of these are simple upgrades to the weapon’s stats to make it stay useful. However, the musket’s key mechanic involves its crank. You can effectively overcharge your shots by cranking the musket multiple times. This will spend more ammo, but deal more damage. Through crafting, you can increase the maximum number of cranks and therefore do significantly more damage in one shot.

Special Options

Unfortunately, Fallout 4 has fewer unique weapons to find, preferring the player to simply upgrade the standard choices to their liking. This means you can keep the same weapon for the whole game so long as you keep upgrading it. However, the Laser Musket has one particular exception to this rule. Should you complete the main story with the Minutemen, Sturges will give you a special weapon: The automatic Laser Musket. It will sport a special upgrade that allows you to fire the weapon repeatedly. Each crank will now fire a separate shot. Unfortunately, this is more of a novelty and doesn’t use the musket’s greatest strengths. Still, it can make for a fun visual and is a cute reward.

Final Thoughts

When fans first saw the Laser Musket, they were excited. The weapon screams Fallout in its aesthetic and feels at home. With Fallout 4’s systems, the first one you get could stay with you the whole game. Running into battle with your musket and the armor of the Minutemen general will make you feel like an American revolutionary fighting for freedom. Alongside Preston and your Minutemen recruits, you’ll feel like a proper leader. Other options may be faster or higher-tech, or simply use less ammo, but the Laser Musket is still a fun addition to the Fallout world. It will certainly help keep you safe as you move past the intro of Fallout 4 and look to save the Commonwealth.
