In Minecraft’s expansive blocky world, various tools and weapons aid the player along their journey. One of these weapons is called the Trident. This nautical weapon can be used as a normal melee, thrown like a spear, and can call down lightning. It is one of Minecraft’s most unique and fun weapons to use. However, due to how difficult it is to obtain this weapon, many players opt for a normal sword instead and do not get to experience the joy of Tridents in Minecraft. This guide will go over everything Tridents and how to use them to their fullest potential.
How To Obtain A Trident
As of update 1.21 ‘Tricky Trials’, a Trident can be obtained from a Trial Chamber Vault. It has a 2.1% drop chance in both the Java edition and Bedrock edition of the game. If not obtained through a Trial Chamber, the only other way to get this weapon is to kill Drowned. These hostile underwater zombies spawn in water with a light level of 0 and spawn holding various items. In the Java edition of Minecraft, the chance for a Drowned to spawn holding a Trident is 6.25%, while in Bedrock it’s a 15% chance. When killed, the Drowned has an 8.5% chance to drop its Trident. This increases by 1% with every level of Looting.
How Do Trident Enchantments Work?
Like most tools and weapons in Minecraft, Tridents can be enchanted using an anvil or enchanting table to increase their damage and functionality. This weapon has four unique enchantments that can be applied at various levels. The first is Impaling, which increases the damage done against sea creatures. This enchantment goes up to level five (V) like most other damage-focused enchantments. A must-have enchant on a Trident is Loyalty. This enchantment goes up to level three and returns the Trident to the owner when thrown. This is extremely useful if the player opts for a ranged playstyle, as they won’t need to pick it up manually.
One of the most fun enchantments in the game is Riptide. This enchant goes up to level three and propels the player forward when the Trident is thrown in water or rain. It is an excellent Elytra take-off tool if you don’t have access to fireworks. The last Trident-exclusive enchantment is Channeling. This level one enchant summons a lightning strike wherever the Trident is thrown. This weapon also benefits from other enchantments, such as Mending and Unbreaking, which both increase durability. Curse of Vanishing can also be applied, but doing this is more of a detriment than a bonus. Riptide is mutually exclusive with Loyalty and Channeling.
Trivia And Closing Thoughts
Tridents do nine hearts of damage when used as a melee weapon and 13.5 hearts when it’s a critical hit. When thrown, it does eight hearts of damage. Although these values are higher than Diamond and Netherite swords in Java, a Trident can only be enchanted with Impaling while the others have access to Sharpness, Smite, and more. In Java, this weapon can be used to gain the following advancements: ‘A Throwaway Joke’ and ‘Very Very Frightening.’ In Bedrock, the ‘Do A Barrel Roll!’ achievement is acquired by using Riptide to give yourself a boost. The Trident is one of Minecraft’s most interesting, versatile, and underrated tools.
