How to Play Incredible The Legend of Zelda VR

The Legend of Zelda movie

The Legend of Zelda VR is not its own game currently. Many games are made for VR, while others get adapted to it. For example, there’s Minecraft in VR and other titles (Skyrim, Resident Evil 4, Among Us, Superhot, and more) that have Virtual Reality versions of the games. Zelda is not one of them, though. For now, there’s no game from Nintendo that allows you to inhabit the world of Hyrule and take control of Link’s Bow, the Master Sword, Hylian Shield, and more. There is, however, a way to experience a couple of games from the iconic franchise in virtual reality.

Try out The Legend of Zelda VR

The original Zelda game is available to play in virtual reality, but it’s awfully convoluted. It’s technically not the original game. In fact, it’s not even a Zelda game whatsoever. It’s actually from DOOM II. The Legend of Doom mod recreates The Legend of Zelda (1986) in VR. It transitions it to first-person and stops it from being top-down, which enhances the virtual reality experience. This mod was made for the QuestZDoom, which is usable with the Meta Quest.

The original Zelda game is already challenging enough. Players were thrust into a new world with not much information and danger lurking at every turn. That is still true with The Legend of Zelda VR, only now you are experiencing it. Instead of, more or less, watching Link experience the story, you’re in it and living it. It’s you the Octoroks are shooting at, and it’s you who has to fight the Gleeok, Ganon, and other brutal bosses.

The very first game in this iconic franchise is not the only one that’s playable in VR. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is also playable thanks to some incredibly hard work from a game designer. The first 3D Zelda game and to this day one of the greatest games ever made, Ocarina of Time holds a special place in gaming history and in the hearts of many gamers. A few years ago, they were able to play it in VR.

This is another challenging one to get started with. Follow these steps, provided by the creator of this VR game:

  1. Download the game. Find the file here
  2. Open the mod in a Hex Editor.
  3. Download and extract the latest Dolphin VR.
  4. Configure your ISO directory in Dolphin.
  5. Change the settings to read for the file “OoTVR_Step_5.zip” found here.
  6. Download and Apply PZLE01.ini config file “OoTVR_Step_6.zip” from the same location.
  7. Download and apply the Action Replay Enhancing Codes: File “OoTVR_Step_7.zip” from the same location.
  8. Get the UHD Zelda texture pack.
  9. Extract Downloaded Texture Pack to “C:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\Dolphin Emulator\Load\Textures.
  10. Click Play and enjoy The Legend of Zelda VR for Ocarina of Time!

It’s a much more challenging mod to get a hold of, but it works for Meta Quest 3, Vive, and other VR devices. Nevertheless, it is an opportunity to put yourself into one of the most iconic video games of all time. You’ll be able to take on Ganondorf and try to protect the Tri-Force and all of Hyrule as young and old Link with the help of Seven Sages and Princess Zelda herself. For now, these are the primary games available in VR. You can also play a VR version of Breath of the Wild as wellThe Legend of Zelda VR is growing. What games should be ported next?
