One of the greatest things about Fallout 4’s open world is the sheer volume of materials available to players at nearly every stage of the game. Snatching up any old junk item (e.g., a desk fan), breaking it down, and repurposing it into modifications is a skill available to any and all Fallout 4 players to enhance their playthrough.
Someone with easy access to nearly unlimited resources to use for crafting and upgrading weapons, armor, and settlements is more likely to succeed in the Commonwealth. That much is true. Learning how and why is the first step to shoring up your resources and boosting your skills and abilities in Fallout 4.
Transforming Trash into Treasure
The Workshops are the epicenter of designing any settlements or rest stops while exploring the Commonwealth. Scrapping junk doesn’t only serve the weapons crafting table – a great deal of the items can be scrapped for Cloth, Metal, and Glass and turned into materials for furniture, defense systems, and more for the good of the settlements.
All that Pre-War money lying around in those decrepit cash registers in time-worn Boston? Not so worthless after all. Grab it up and repurpose it into beds for the settlers. Those endless battered clipboards all over the long-emptied offices across the Commonwealth? Scrap them for screws that can be used for weapons modifications.
Dumpster Diving as a Life Benefit
So why should players spend their precious minutes in the search for Shawn scavenging the wasteland for parts, effectively becoming a pack rat for junk? Timing is everything here, or at least a pretty significant component.
Early in Fallout 4, before some pretty significant weapons perks can be unlocked, players can make far more headway strengthening forces and requisitions at the settlements. While Fallout 4 players are building themselves up, getting ingredients for crafting and upgrading weapons is a great deal cheaper than any traveling caravan OR established town in the Commonwealth. Take a look around. See what materials come out of various junk items.
Things to Consider
Although all of these scrap materials are within reach across the Commonwealth, some require special consideration. Preparations will go a long way here; if strength is not one of your survivor’s strongest character traits, your maximum carrying capability will have to be enhanced or supplemented in some way.
A smaller consideration here is the partner brought along when scrapping. All companions have differing abilities and, as such, can carry an increased load before becoming weighed down. One example of this is how much more volume ‘Codsworth’ can carry as opposed to ‘Dogmeat’. Typical of partners in the Fallout game series, robotic companions can carry more than human or animal companions.
Final Approach
Scrapping junk can be done on its own little side missions, or you can pick up items during quests or while adventuring across the Commonwealth. The latest Fallout 4 update from Bethesda added a great deal and included some developer fixes-click here for details.
In the meantime, scrap and junk items can be found in almost every building and sector of the Commonwealth, starting right there in Vault 111 after emerging from the cryogenic tank. Happy scrapping, Vault-Dweller!
