Barring any delays, Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws will be released in just over three months when it launches on Friday, August 30th. The release date was revealed via a story trailer for the game that was uploaded to Ubisoft’s YouTube channel back in early April.
Developed by Massive Entertainment, Star Wars Outlaws takes place between the 1-year time gap between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Han has been frozen in carbonite, Luke Skywalker lost a hand in his duel with his newly revealed father Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker, and the Rebels were forced to flee from their hidden base on Hoth.
Playing an Outlaw in Star Wars Outlaws
Players will assume the role of Kay Vess in Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws as she attempts to pull off a giant heist in the Outer Rim of the Star Wars galaxy. The Outer Rim is where planets like Tatooine can be found and also where famous crime boss and leader of the Hutt Cartel Jabba the Hutt resides. Vess is hoping to succeed with the heist so she can use the funds to buy herself a better life.
Companions
Similar to how Luke had Han and Leia as companions, Kay Vess will also have companions of her own in her adventure through the game. One such companion is the axolotl looking Nix that can be seen hanging out on Kay’s shoulders. Nix isn’t just a cosmetic pet though, he can also help out in combat by fetching items and pressing buttons as revealed in a gameplay trailer back in 2023.
Kay’s other companion is a former BX-Series Separatist Commando Droid named ND-5 that seems to have either been reprogrammed based on its chest damage or may have even grown past its programming. While we don’t know much about ND-5 yet, my guess is he acts as an enforcer/guard for Kay and if you’ve seen Clone Wars, you’d know how deadly droid commandos can be.
Setting
Star Wars Outlaws is set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and in that time period the Empire is trying to exert more control over the galaxy as it also tries to fight against the Rebellion, allowing criminal organizations to run rampant throughout the galaxy.
While Kay can work with or make an enemy of any criminal faction in the game, the main criminal enterprise she’ll be going toe to toe with is the Zerek Besh run by the crime boss Sliro. The Empire is another faction that Kay Vess can fight against and doing so will result in a GTA-style wanted system with the Empire progressively sending harder and harder units to hunt her down. Whether Kay can also work with the Empire is yet to be seen but my guess is probably no.
Different Editions
Star Wars Outlaws wouldn’t be an Ubisoft game if it didn’t have different editions available for pre-order and different editions it has. The Standard Edition costs $69.99, the Gold Edition costs $109.99, and the Ultimate Edition costs $129.99. Predictably, this hasn’t sat right with some gamers and honestly I can’t blame them. $70.00 is already a lot to charge for a game and if people want to experience everything in the game, having to shell out $130.00 just seems ludicrous to me.
On top of that, Ubisoft also thinks gamers should get comfortable with not owning their games which seems like a very foot in mouth thing to say.
Consoles and PC
Star Wars Outlaws will be available via Ubisoft Connect and Epic Games Store for PC and will also be on the X-Box Series X/S and the PlayStation 5. You can also get the game for PC via Green Man Gaming which includes the Standard, Gold, and Ultimate editions of the game.
