Impatiently Waiting for Dragon Age

The Dragon Age franchise gathered a large fanbase in the early 2010s with three successful games. With the help of additional media like books, shows, and a movie, it became one of EA’s staple IPs. However, since 2014, fans have been desperate for another mainline entry. Earlier this year we saw the first look at gameplay for the fourth installment. After years of waiting, when can fans expect to see the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard?

A Tough Road

In 2014, Bioware released Dragon Age: Inquisition to widespread acclaim and many awards. With several DLCs released in 2015, the game ended on a cliffhanger in its Trespasser epilogue. Despite Bioware‘s promise of more for the series, however, a new entry was nowhere to be seen for quite some time. Between working on a new Mass Effect and the failed launch of Anthem, fans saw nothing. Reports would eventually come out over the multiple restarts the game had under different internal teams. Fans were concerned, to say the least.

Slow Teases

Bioware didn’t remain quiet about Dragon Age forever, though. At The Game Awards in 2020, Dragon Age first showed teaser footage for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. Fans were ecstatic that an announcement was made, though no release window was discussed. The trailer seemed largely conceptual, though it confirmed a few returning characters and story beats. Still, the news stopped as quickly as it arrived. Bioware had little more to say, and fans were left high and dry. Another small tease would come in the years to follow, but Bioware remained mostly tight-lipped about the development of the next Dragon Age.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Arrives

Various gaming pundits hinted that 2024 was the year for Dragon Age news. Lo and behold, they were correct. June 2024 saw the re-reveal of Dragon Age 4, now titled Dragon Age: The Veilguard. With its new title, a gameplay reveal and the developers finally speaking openly, everyone was excited again. However, one thing remained uncertain: the release date. While it seemed like 2024 was the year for this game, no official date was announced. Bioware asked fans to be patient, but people had been patient long enough.

Fan Sleuthing

Nothing can stop fans from digging around and looking for clues. At first, there wasn’t much to go on in terms of possible information. However, recently some things emerged that have given fans a better idea for a possible release date. An EA earnings call implied a release in the final quarter of 2024. The publication PCgamer also made a claim about a “planned November release” that caught attention. Finally, Bioware confirmed the release date would be announced in the month of August. For the Dragon Age hopeful, it felt like news was about ready to burst open.

Dragon Age Soon?

One way or another, it’s clear that Dragon Age: The Veilguard is approaching fast. With a busy Fall for game releases, Bioware is clearly making sure to target the right window. A November release would be in line with both Dragon Age: Origins and Inquisition. An October release is also the earliest we could expect if the earnings call is to be understood correctly. December seems unlikely, though possible. Regardless, it is clear that fans of the franchise should be ready to open up their fall schedules for the next adventure into Thedas.
