The upcoming Infinity Nikki is the latest in the series of dress up gacha games by Chinese developer Papergames. While it will still feature the iconic styling battles of the rest of the series, Infinity Nikki promises much more.
An Open World
Like many games nowadays, Infinity Nikki is certainly taking inspiration from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. For the first time in series history, Miraland will be a fully open world to explore. In typical cozy game fashion, Infinity Nikki will feature fishing, bug catching, and more, but also some platforming and environmental puzzles, all of which are completely new to the Nikki series.
The environments depicted so far in Infinity Nikki are beautiful and full of detail. Of course, a game series that has always been about fashion would need stunning backdrops, and this one delivers. The density of foliage shown off in the trailers is jaw-dropping, and that’s not the only impressive thing the game has going on. All of the NPCs and environments shown so far are sporting high-resolution textures, and the overall softness of the lighting really drives home that cozy vibe. It’s almost as if the developers don’t want players to be able to take a bad screenshot.
Gameplay in Infinity Nikki
Information on the gameplay of Infinity Nikki is still fairly limited given that recruiting for a closed beta test has only just begun. However, we can still tell a good amount from the trailers. As stated before, Infinity Nikki will carry on the proud series tradition of styling battles. In these, the player is challenged to put together an outfit within a given theme, such as “cool” or “elegant.” If she’s able to put together a better outfit than the NPC (and show it off better with some skills), then she wins. In the other games in the series, these formed the core of the gameplay, but it remains to be seen how they will play into the story for Infinity Nikki.
Nikki’s outfits also seem to play a role in the open world exploration of the new title. The trailers show off a blue dress that seems to give Nikki either a double-jump of sorts. She’s also shown switching to a special outfit to catch fish, and another one to hunt for bugs. Nikki even dons an electrician’s outfit at one point in the trailer, although for what purpose is still somewhat a mystery. Hopefully having to constantly switch outfits doesn’t become too cumbersome, but it shouldn’t be any more of a chore than switching tools in a game like Animal Crossing.
Final Thoughts
The Nikki series has always been first and foremost about fashion, and it doesn’t look like that’s changing. However, it looks like Infinity Nikki is bringing a whole lot more to the table, possibly enough to even entice many players that would have dismissed the earlier entries. In the mobile games, it can be pretty easy to forget that Miraland is a fantasy world, but Infinity Nikki really brings that to the forefront. Whether you’re walking through a lovely forest or platforming between giant paper cranes, the game really conveys that fantastical feeling.
Players can currently apply for the closed beta test on mobile and PC, and instructions for how to do so are on the website. As for when the full game will be released, we don’t currently know for sure as Papergames has it listed with a placeholder date of December 31, 2024. Fans can hope to see it before the end of the year, but early next year might end up being more likely. Either way, in addition to PC and mobile, Nikki will be styling on all modern consoles when she hits the stores.
