Stardew Valley has remained popular partially thanks to the modding community. Developers have worked hard to create Stardew Valley mods that enhance the game whether it’s through texture overhauls or entirely new areas. If you’re looking to experience Stardew Valley in a new way, I can’t recommend installing mods enough! In this article, I’m going to walk you through the process of how to install Stardew Valley mods in 2024.
How to Install Stardew Valley Mods in 2024
Before you start modding, I HIGHLY recommend that you back up any of the files you’ll be changing. While modding is relatively straightforward, it is possible to accidentally corrupt existing files. Modding is external, meaning the game developers often do not account for it and things can go awry.
Choose a Modding Platform
There are several platforms you can use to install Stardew Valley mods. Two of the most popular choices are Nexus Mods and the Stardew Valley Modding Forum. Visit these platforms to explore a wide range of mods categorized by type, popularity, and user ratings.
Download Modding Tools
To make the mod installation process easier, you can download specific modding tools. SMAPI, also known as Stardew Modding API, remains the go-to mod loader for Stardew Valley. Be sure that you have the latest version of SMAPI that’s compatible with your game version.
Additionally, Content Patcher can enhance your modding experience by providing an easy-to-use interface and mod management features. I highly recommend installing both of these tools, they’re extremely helpful!
Install SMAPI
Once you’ve downloaded SMAPI, follow the installation instructions provided by the developers. Typically, this involves extracting the SMAPI files into your Stardew Valley game directory. Make sure you launch the game through this Stardew Valley mod with the executable to ensure it’s installed correctly.
Install Mods
With SMAPI installed, it’s time to install the mods you want. Download them from your chosen platform and place them in the “Mods” folder within your Stardew Valley directory. The directory can be found here:
- Click on the drive where Steam is installed, such as Windows (C:)
- Open the folder labeled Program Files (x86)
- Navigate to Steam > steamapps > Common > Stardew Valley
I would like to note that some mods may require additional mods to work, so be sure to carefully read the mod descriptions.
Configure Mods (If Needed)
I would like to take the time to mention that some mods may need configuring. What does this mean? Depending on what mods you’ve chosen to install, you may need to configure certain files or settings. These allow you to customize how the mod works in-game. Usually, the site where you downloaded the mod will tell you if this is the case.
Launch Stardew Valley
Once you’ve installed and configured your mods, launch the game through the SMAPI executable. This ensures that SMAPI loads the mods properly before the game starts. You’ll know you’ve done it right if you see a console window displaying information about all of the loaded mods.
You’re Ready to Play
Modding Stardew Valley in 2024 is easier than ever, thanks to dedicated modding platforms and user-friendly tools. By following this step-by-step guide, you can install and enjoy a variety of mods that enrich your experience. Happy farming!
