Is Fortnite The Greatest Game Ever Created? April 7, 2025

Is Fortnite the best video game ever? Daft Punk

What started as a cooperative survival game has become a cultural phenomenon. Fortnite’s transition from the reputation of being a child’s game to being a mainstay on consoles everywhere, despite age, is inspiring. Epic Games has not only carved out a successful blueprint for themselves but has also opened the floodgates for many after them. Obviously, when talking about the greatest in any topic, it is entirely subjective. I’ll review why Fortnite makes a strong case in this argument.

Fortnite is widely known for its battle royale mode, which really came to prominence when popular streamers such as Ninja and TSM Myth were at the peak of their popularity. This would launch Fortnite into the competitive eSports scene, where many of the world’s top players would make a name for themselves in the streaming community. The concept of battle royale is simple: Drop X amount of players on a map with weapons while staying inside a safe area that shrinks in intervals.

This is what made Fortnite so popular, but it is not the only thing the game offers. The game is also riddled with cooperative mini-games, role-playing games, and other shooting game modes. For example, if you’re not in the mood for battle royale, you can still have a rocking time with your friends in Festival. In Festival, you and your friends play the role of a band performing songs of your choosing on stage. Think Guitar Hero. Each of you has your own unique part. Maybe you’re the lead singer in the band performing the lyrics, and your brother is the drummer. It’s still engaging and fun.

There are countless other games with role-playing elements where you can own a home or car and live the city life. There are racing games. There are survival games. Some games are made by gamers or creators that Epic places into Fortnite. The coolest thing about this is that the creators are getting paid for these maps or game modes.

Cultural Impact And Inclusion

Regardless of how you feel about Fortnite, you have to give Epic Games its props. They have done a masterful job at staying tapped into the cool and trending. Within this social media era, everyone of all ages has been entertained by one viral moment or another. Not only does Fortnite offer a plethora of game modes, they offers a variety of pop culture trends, icons, and songs. The crossovers that Epic Games pulls off are astounding. They have all the most popular songs to complement the most viral dances on TikTok and social media, and just about character crossover you can think of that’s popular.

Celebrities from Snoop Dogg to John Cena and the Marvel Superheroes have all made their way into Fortnite’s item shop. The item shop, for these reasons, is its own entity and has its cult following. Many players, kids and adults alike, sit at the menu, waiting for the daily reset to check on what’s new. This brings me to my final point. Epic listens to their audience. If there is something that the players want, they go out and do it. If the players voice their frustrations over something, Epic will typically fix it. They make their audience feel included and like their voices matter. This is why Fortnite continues to grow with no signs of slowing down.

Wrap Up

Okay, so maybe to you, Fortnite isn’t the greatest game ever made. There are way too many amazing games over the years to pick just one as the universal greatest ever. With everything Fortnite offers to players of all ages and tastes, I’d put it in the conversation. I will undoubtedly say that it kicked off a new generation of gaming. The way Epic Games has handled Fortnite has been absolutely genius. If not the greatest, it may be the greatest-managed game of all time.

Fortnite has taken the eSports scene by storm. It partners with some of the biggest brands and companies in the world, and it has a very passionate fan base. I’m not even the biggest fan of the game, but I can acknowledge how great Epic Games has been with the handling of Fortnite.
