Is League Of Legends Free To Play?

Yes, League of Legends is free to play for everyone. Riot Games launched their multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game in 2009. More than a decade since its introduction, there are still more than 100 million active monthly users that play the game. If you want to start playing the game, Riot made sure that it would still be free even after these years, making sure that everyone who has a PC can still enjoy the game without breaking the bank. Unlike any other MOBA games, buying skins in League of Legends would not give you an advantage except having a different skin from other players.

League of Legends was released in 2009 by Riot Games, which was founded by Brandon “Ryze” Beck and Marc “Tryndamere” Merrill, two roommates at the University of Southern California. Inspired by an earlier MOBA called Defense of the Ancients (DOTA), a custom map in the computer video game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, Ryze and Tryndamere developed a stand-alone MOBA they called League of Legends. Since its release in October 2009, League of Legends has been free-to-play although it has purchasable character customization.

How is League of Legends played?

In the main gameplay of Summer’s Rift, a player will choose a character based on his liking. Each character has a different set of abilities, and these characters are often grouped by their roles in the gameplay. As of 2024, there are over 160 champions available to play. During the match, each champion will level up once they acquire enough experience points (XP) through killing creeps and enemies. Players also buy items that increase champions’ abilities through gold, which can be acquired by killing minions and enemies and through time.

The main map of League of Legends is the Summoner’s Rift, a square map where the team bases are located on the top right and bottom left corners. The two bases are then connected with three pathways – one diagonally in the center (middle lane), and each lane at top and at the bottom of the map (top and bottom lanes). Each of these lanes have three turrets and one inhibitor. The game ends when one team successfully destroys the other team’s fountain, or when one team surrenders.

Roles of Champions

Since there are three pathways and five heroes in a game of League of Legends, each player should decide which lane he should go. First, the top laner should put the pressure on the enemy with its aggressive playstyle. Top laner heroes can either be tanks, fighters, or heroes that can push the lane faster than usual. Second, the jungle role is the most influential in a game in that it is the main hero for securing objectives in the map such as the Baron, Dragons, and Void Grubs.

Third is the mid lane, who should easily go to the top or bottom lane to help allies to their advantage. Fourth is the bot lane, a role usually reserved for ADC (Attack Damage Carry) heroes that can consistently deal damage to the opponents, especially in team fights. Last but definitely not the least, the support role  is the one who is in-charge of maintaining vision control in the map to avoid gank from the enemy team.
