Mass Effect was a hit for its time. Bioware released Mass Effect only on Xbox in 2007, then released later on the PlayStation 3 and Windows. Then its sequels followed it onto the same platforms on release, up to Mass Effect 3 as it ended the saga and Shepard’s Story and yet still lived on in many players’ hearts, even with its… debatable ending on launch. In 2021, it was re-released, updated, and redone on a new engine for their players to play the sci-fi trilogy yet again.
What is Mass Effect?
Mass Effect follows Commander Shepard as he travels throughout the galaxy uncovering visions from the first game about a race known as the Protheons and their interactions with the Reapers. Without spoiling much of the story, I can tell you, that you will visit multiple planets and see a variety of aliens.
Now what makes Mass Effect unique is that its story is told by your actions through dialogue and action events, you have a sort of Karma bar, kinda of what you would see in the older Fallout games. In this game its called Paragon and Renegade, with Paragon being the good side and lawful Shepard and Renegade being the aggressive side and the chaotic Shepard.
In the legendary edition, you get all three games, which means you can experience your choices as you go through the worlds. Yes, as you make your decisions in one game, it will carry over to the other games, unless you reload your save, you will live with literally life-altering decisions. One thing I can say is this game will force you to make the toughest decisions as you decide who or what to carry with you. I don’t want to spoil the story for anyone because I can talk about the story but I won’t.
I have several moments that I still remember from crewmates from the first game or second game that you meet again, and it’s just that it makes it worth all the moments of learning what to do and what not to do. I remember moments where I broke down crying, seeing those heartbreak moments. You get an amazing story, an amazing cast of crew members, and fights you won’t forget. Heartbreak and heartwarming moments when you decide how it all goes down. Did I mention you can get romances with your crew, because you can and that will affect the story down the line too.
If you are looking for good games in fantasy, you should check out Baldur’s Gate 3, while opposite from the sci-fi game that is Mass Effect, it’s still even one of my top favorites.
Legendary Edition
The Legendary Edition comes with several upgrades, including three games that are built from the ground up on a new engine with better optimizations. It also includes cut content from all three games and every DLC the games included with the new ending for Mass Effect 3. It adds at least 150 hours to the game if you take your time to explore everything and its secrets; you would reach less than that if you decide to just follow the story and experience it. Which isn’t a bad thing either.
The graphics and the optimization make the game better. The Legendary Edition sits at 59.99 in their respective stores. Which in my opinion is a VERY good price to buy the game at, saying this game is worth that price tag is, in my opinion, it’s not, it’s worth more. Not even considering the DLC but if you get into the game as much as I did, you will find yourself immersed in a world of aliens and find yourself traveling with souls that you want to get to know more and more.

Overall
I can’t explain just how amazing this game is without going on for ages about the story and its characters. Each having their redemption arc and having their own story to tell makes for a compelling game, along with the ability to alter the story at any moment for a bad decision or a good one. It’s a story I played for hundreds of hours, even when it first came out. I can’t tell you enough how much this game means to me and has made me a Mass Effect fan for life.
This game, the story, and the content it provides are worth so much, especially if you willingly look past the old gen mechanics of the first two games, mainly one. But regardless, this will be a game to pick up and play even at full price. I would say go and grab it or wait for it to go on sale again. Bioware does a good job with making their games, so you can bet the next official Mass Effect game will be one worth playing, hopefully even with the massive EA layoffs leaving it in pre-production while they focus on Dragon Age.
