1 Small End Step for Man, 1 Giant Upkeep for MTG: Jace Reawakened

It’s time for another small end step for man and giant upkeep for Magic: The Gathering as we make the chase across Thunder Junction for an unusual card. Dare I say, it’s a card unlike any other card in the history of MTG. Which card is that? You guessed it (it is, after all, in the title of this article): Jace Reawakened!

Jace Reawakened Basically Breaks Magic Completely

And the card’s already proving to be pretty sick in multiple formats — Timeless, Historic, Pauper, Explorer, Modern, Legacy, and of course Standard. You name it, Jace is in it. One should be maybe a little surprised given the downside of this card, which isn’t much for two blue mana on a 3-loyalty walker.

Right off the bat, he’s efficient. But you wouldn’t expect anything less from Jace Beleren. Still, aside from the lack of protection compared to his previous iteration, Jace, The Perfected Mind from the All Will Be One expansion, Reawakened certainly puts the color blue on the map as far as control is concerned in a big way.

Why? Because what you have with Jace Reawakened is a true mana engine. And that’s hard to come by with blue.

Wait a second, come again? How is it that blue can ramp? Not without green! Or red if you want treasure tokens!

Consider the new plot mechanic, something Lilah, Undefeated Slickshot likes, and it might make everything quite clear. Sure, you can’t cast this Jace until your fourth turn, but that’s okay as once you get him on the field, plot literally any 3-mana card in your hand. And on your fifth turn, that card’s free to cast. Just like that.

Make things even worse by ult’ing this card, you get to copy every spell you cast until the end of that turn.

Again, though…. The downside. All good, though, as with blue, countermagic plays well in control as you wait it out until it’s time to drop Jace on the battlefield and start plotting spells for those future turns. But just in case your opponent is prepared to deal with blue, here are some gross ways to completely break Jace —

Throw in a Mirror Box

What would be worse than just one Jace Reawakened hitting the battlefield? How about two? Or three! Imagine getting to exile not one but two cards from your hand, casting both for free on your next turn.

The Mirror Box does this perfectly given its main use is to do away with the “legend rule.” As you know, planeswalkers are legendary, meaning you can only have one of any kind on the battlefield. The Mirror Box allows you to cast another copy from your deck!

And to make it worse? This doozy of a card from Kamigawa Neon Dynasty costs three. Guess who loves 3-mana cards. We don’t even have to say his name….

And Then There’s the Invasion of Vryn

Specifically, when you get all those counters off the Invasion of Vryn battle, you cast the Overloaded Mage-Ring for free. What does this card do again? Pretty sick when you ask me…. You copy target spell you control.

Read it again.

Typically, copy spells often focus more on instants, sorceries and creatures. But planeswalkers? That’s rare. This opens up that Pandora’s Box for you in a big, nasty way.

It doesn’t specify anything about the ‘type’ of spell. It just says…. ‘Spell’!

Make sure you have the Mirror Box on the battlefield, cast Jace Reawakened on your turn, pay one and tap the Mage-Ring before it resolves, and guess what: you will also have two Jaces ready to plot spells.

Of Course, You Can Add Insult to Injury With Three Blind Mice

And by then, we’re pretty sure your opponent would concede after seeing this card hit the board. Unless of course your opponent has a nasty Goldvein Hydra to eat up those little critters.

Known best in Wilds of Eldraine, the “Three Blind Mice” made enchantment decks turn into stupid dumb fun as you’re copying not just any ‘creature’ token, but any token on your side of the battlefield. Again, let that sink in after casting an Overloaded Mage-Ring….

What does that Mage-Ring do? It creates a token copy of any spell you’ve cast. That means you have a token copy of Jace on the battlefield!

Plot just one of these bad-boy sagas, and on your following turn, you get to cast Three Blind Mice for free and copy Jace on the next turn for three of him to work with.

Three Jaces. On the battlefield. At the same time.

That’s just…. Next-level insanity.

It Might Just Be the Best Azorius Control Deck Today

Yep, all you would need is a healthy dose of countermagic, some good draw spells, maybe a few Haughty Djinns. And your opponent would be puking his/her guts out. Simple.
