Jet the Hawk is one of Sonic’s more interesting main rivals and needs new attention. Where Shadow the Hedgehog and Metal Sonic get by on their speed, Jet finds other ways to keep up with Sonic. This hoverboard-racing thief is a member of the Babylon Rogues. Jet the Hawk is a rival worth the attention, and you should know why he’s called the ‘Legendary Wind Master’.
Understanding Who Jet the Hawk is
Jet the Hawk was first introduced in 2007’s Sonic Riders, which took a different gameplay approach than previous Sonic games. Sonic Riders is a racing game, where you race on ‘Extreme Gears’ to reach the finish line. The Extreme Gears are vast, they can be hoverboards, hover skates, or even hoverbikes. The game was a commercial success, making the bestsellers list for both the PlayStation 2 and the GameCube. It spawned two separate sequels: Sonic Riders Zero Gravity in 2008 and Sonic Free Riders in 2010.
Jet’s story starts with the Babylon Rogues, a legendary group of wind thieves that spans generations. Jet the Hawk is the leader of the current generation, joined by the sensible Wave and the lunkheaded Storm. Throughout the storyline, Jet is an antagonist acting against Sonic and his friends. In fact, Jet even works alongside Eggman to gather the seven emeralds and awaken Babylon Garden. However, Eggman betrayed Jet to gain the ancient treasures of Babylon, believing it would help him rule the world.
What Makes Jet Different
What makes Jet different from Sonic’s other rivals is his goal. Metal Sonic is characterized by his desire to be the ‘real’ one, and not the faker. Shadow the Hedgehog initially wanted vengeance against humanity, but he now seeks to protect them from danger. Jet the Hawk has no greater ambitions than wealth, and constantly proving that he’s faster than Sonic. Jet and the rest of the Babylon Rogues are thieves who steal from various institutions. In spite of his rude behavior, Jet proves that he can be honorable even when he loses.
Jet’s fatal flaw is also what drives his rivalry with Sonic; his overwhelming pride. Jet takes himself seriously, and he is incredibly cocky. Jet consistently emphasizes that he is the ‘fastest’, and Sonic directly stands in the way of that. Sonic is different because he runs without the need for an Extreme Gear. Jet on the other hand makes use of his hoverboard to keep up with the blue blur. Their highly intense rivalry is what drives most of their competition throughout the games. Despite their strong rivalry, Jet and Sonic share a mutual respect for one another’s talents. Overall, Jet the Hawk’s role in Riders casts him as a wildcard, consistently challenging Sonic for his title as the fastest.
Jet Needs More Fuel
Jet the Hawk is an interesting character, and he has the potential as a rival for Sonic. Jet even serves as a dark mirror to Sonic’s more negative traits. Both of them are egotistical, and fast, but Sonic always does his best to put people before him. Sonic is always going to do the right thing because he has a good heart. Jet, on the other hand, is motivated purely by his own selfish wants, and it gives the two an interesting dynamic.
Sonic the Hedgehog has been running for 32 years, and the franchise has created many characters. Characters like Shadow, Knuckles, and Metal Sonic all find ways to still be relevant. Jet unfortunately feels like a character who just has not hit that level yet. A new Sonic Riders could help further the fan’s public opinion of him, and rocket this rogue to new heights. In addition, it would progress Jet and Sonic’s rivalry to make it more memorable.
