With only a month before Dragon Age The Veilguard’s October 31st release, the community’s excitement for the next installment has grown by leaps and bounds. So far, very few details about the game’s narrative have been confirmed. However, with the game being a direct sequel to the Dragon Age: Inquisition, what fans need to know will be more relevant than ever. With all the new details coming out from Bioware, and the plethora of extra content priming the fan base, there are a few key details that fans should familiarize themselves with to be completely up to speed on the Veilguard’s plot.

History

During the Trespasser DLC, players were afforded several key pieces of the long-forgotten history of the fabled Dread Wolf. Through murals and interactions with Solas, himself, the Inquisitor learns that the Evanuris were not gods, but mages who grew in power to be regarded as gods. While Solas doesn’t detail the atrocities the Elven gods committed to earn his disdain, it becomes painfully obvious that they were creatures lusting for power -to the detriment of all -and that their actions were enough of a threat to the people that he had to act. This prompted him to form the Veil; the metaphysical barrier separating the waking world from the Fade; and imprisoning them for all eternity.

Key details about the world-state for Dragon Age The Veilguard, which characters will remain relevant in the game’s plot progression, and what fans could potentially see regarding the narrative, will affect the impact of a story that has been building for more than ten years. The game’s sweeping story could finally answer one of the greatest mysteries in Thedas: Why did Dread Wolf lock away the Elven pantheon in the Fade? And give players and fans a conclusion to Solas’ (and the Inquisitor’s) storylines in a fulfilling way.

The player’s world-state will be conditional on three specific plot points, from Trespasser: Who did the Inquisitor romance, did the Inquisitor disband the Inquisition, and whether they chose to stop or save Solas. Romance; in particular; potentially has a major element in the game’s narrative -especially if the player previously romanced Solas. Disbanding the Inquisition will jeopardize the effectiveness of the Veilguard, their sphere of influence, and their chances of success. The motivations of the Inquisitor set forth at the end of Trespasser; Stopping Solas and saving Solas from himself; will dictate the plot progression in a big way -as dialogue options will be more geared to follow that decision.

Major Plot Details

In the last eight in-game years, before the start of Dragon Age the Veilguard, Varric, and Harding have been hunting for Solas. Tracking him, and his various machinations north, the duo hopes to find the Dread Wolf and convince him to abort his plans to tear down the Veil. Throughout their chase, Varric and Harding discover a few details about the Dread Wolf’s whereabouts and learn that Solas’ plan involves the Arlathan Forest -the ancient homeland of the Elves. The source: the Veil Jumpers; a group that exclusively explores ancient Elven ruins and are experts in their magic -and one of Veilguard’s new factions.

The twenty-two-minute gameplay trailer, released in June, gave players a first look into the beginning of the game.  In it, a major piece of the plot’s direction culminated in the confrontation between Varric and Solas. Wherein, it was revealed that Solas’ plan to bring down the Veil, had not been just because of his desire to undo the mistakes of the past but to move the remaining Evanuris from their crumbling prison to a new one. Unaware of his intentions, Rook interrupts the ritual and inadvertently lets them free -while trapping Solas in the Fade instead. The player’s main goal then shifts to damage control: to stop the blighted Elven Gods from destroying the world.

Thanks to several stories in the anthology, Tevinter Nights, details about Thedas’ world-state before the start of Dragon Age The Veilguard have come to light. Specifically, the fact that the Qunari have refocused their efforts against Tevinter after their failure during Trespasser. The Qunari quickly invaded the cities of Ventus, Carastes, and Neromenain, before taking Treviso in Antiva. The Antivan Crows, world-renowned and deadly assassins, are actively resisting and have managed to take out a few lieutenants and weapon caches but have yet to make any significant headway. This development will be something the players will have to contend with in Veilguard, as the Qunari are a formidable adversary even on the best of days.

Potential Cameos

Given that a noticeable number of plot points from previous games could come to a head in Dragon Age the Veilguard, it would be a disservice not to mention the more relevant secondary plots and characters that have the potential to become important story beats. Namely, the fact that Dorian Pavus; a former companion in Inquisition; is currently a member of the Magisterium and is in league with another powerful and influential mage, named Maevaris Telani, attempt to stem the tide of the Venatori’s influence and corruption within Tevinter. Other potential cameos include Iron Bull (if Dorian romanced him) and Fenris -since The Blue Wraith comic puts him squarely in Tevinter and has confirmed his efforts against the Venatori.
