King Kong Chases Players in Epic Metroidvania Survivor Instinct

King Kong Survivor Instinct

King Kong has starred in many different stories and incarnations as one of the oldest and most iconic kaiju in the entire genre. Despite his long history, video games are one of the more underexplored works for the Titan to explore. The iconic “MonsterVerse” will give Kong an interesting setup for a game; the cinematic Metroidvania Kong Survivor Instinct.

To many, Metroidvania would be a strange setup for a character who usually fought in city-sized battles against other titans. On the other hand, this game will provide an opportunity to flesh out the universe and explore the kaiju genre from an Avant-Garde perspective. Here is a breakdown of the latest game in the MonsterVerse saga.

King Kong’s Latest Adventure

According to Bloody Disgusting, MonsterVerse’s King Kong will star in an upcoming video game. The game is titled Kong Survivor Instinct and will arrive for consoles and PCs this fall. The story follows oil rig worker David as his city is caught between the conflict of several Titans converging on the city. Along the way, he must save his daughter, Stacy.  While human characters in kaiju stories have often been called nuisances, this is a surprisingly personal setup.

One of the most exciting facts of this story is that it will not remain completely separate from the rest of the saga. One of the game’s main villains will be eco-terrorist Alan Jonah, Charles Dance’s character from 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Even if Dance himself doesn’t return, seeing the conclusion to his arc would be a great way to tie up loose ends for the film.

To many, this will also redeem Kong’s name within the gaming world. Last year, IguanaBee released Skull Island: Rise of Kong, which is unrelated to the ongoing MonsterVerse saga. However, critics universally panned the game for its terrible graphics and gameplay. With the Kong Survivor Instinct, the kaiju could receive proper treatment from the gaming medium.

The Unique Setup of Kong Survivor Instinct

Perhaps the game’s most intriguing aspect is that it would be a Metroidvania title. For those unaware, the genre follows a protagonist exploring a labyrinthian map as they gain abilities that open even further paths. As with any good Metroidvania game, Kong Survivor Instinct gives players many unique tools. This time around, the main tool is the “Orca Σ,” a device that David uses to influence the behavior of nearby Titans. Combining control over kaiju with traditional Metroidvania gameplay creates an interesting dynamic.

As one can guess, this is a strange setup for a Kaiju game. When one imagines a King Kong game, it’s probably in a massive arena where they duke it out with other Titans. Settling on a ground-level adventure adds humanity to the genre, capturing the gravity and scale one would expect for such a massive event. The original announcement emphasized how the game would also feature survival elements, such as scavenging for resources, highlighting the apocalyptic nature of the story.

Expanding the MonsterVerse

Ever since 2014’s Godzilla, Warner Bros’, MonsterVerse has been a powerful example of a cinematic universe done right. The saga brought in several of the most iconic kaiju from Toho, such as Mothra, Rodan, Gidorah, and many others, onto the big screen. Additionally, the series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters proved the series could develop an engaging human cast along the way. This would not be the first MonsterVerse game announced, as the strategic Titan Chasers was also announced not long ago.

In recent years, Warner Brothers experimented with giving some of their larger IPs proper video game adaptations. Recent examples include the critically panned Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and the well-received crossover Multiversus. With the minds of Polish developer 7Levels, Survivor Instinct could once again bring WB’s gaming division into the spotlight.
