Kingdom Hearts and the Importance of Tron

Kingdom Hearts is a series that is no stranger to cross-overs and collaborations. The very series was built on a company crossover of Disney’s various movie licenses and Square Enix’s Final Fantasy video game series. If anything, it’s a miracle these games get ported and released so consistently, because the copyright clauses must be football yards worth of text long.

There are many Disney franchises that have appeared in Kingdom Hearts. Think of any of the Renaissance films, and they’re most likely there. The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin, all just to name a few. If there’s one Disney IP that appears in Kingdom Hearts that you wouldn’t expect, it’s the subject of today’s article, Tron.

Kingdom Hearts 2 and Tron

Tron is a really interesting case because it is a franchise owned by Disney. This writer had no clue. It’s not like it’s easy to find the Disney logo on any of the Tron posters or advertising. But yes, Tron is a cult-classic sci-fi film from the 1980s that was eventually used in Kingdom Hearts. Tron’s world, Space Paranoids, first made its series appearance in Kingdom Hearts 2.

It’s a really quirky yet fun world to explore. Space Paranoids feels a bit disconnected from the other worlds. Tron and the enemies Sora and his friends fight in said world feel not Disney-like at all. But the world is still a fan favorite due to its significance to the game’s story. Tron helps Sora and the gang take back control of their world, and it’s really fun to watch this story unravel.

Tron never made an appearance again in the series. This might have been because it was connected to Radiant Garden, a world exclusive to Kingdom Hearts 2. That was until Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, released in 2012. This game had a world from the movie Tron: Legacy, which also came out around the same time.

This world was a bit different, since it was based on a different movie of the same series. It had some old characters and a lot of new characters. It was really enjoyable to see a continuation of an older world from a previous entry in the series. It does feel completely different, though. The original movie came out in the 80s, and Legacy came out in 2010, so the aesthetics are similar. It’s just one that is a lot more realized and futuristic looking.

Tron’s Rarity and Heart

The best part about the Tron worlds in Kingdom Hearts is the relationship between the characters. Sora and his friends make quick friends with Tron. In Kingdom Hearts 2, the Tron world is the part in the late game where you get many powerful abilities and pieces of equipment, so it just really adds some extra enjoyment to an already fun world.

In Dream Drop Distance, it is also emotional since Tron from 2 is a different, corrupted character that Sora tries to save. It still holds some emotional weight, but this series was really done the best in the second installment. Maybe this series can make an appearance in Kingdom Hearts 4 again. It would sure be fun to catch up with these characters.
