Kingdom Hearts is a series that is known by many as being the “Disney and Final Fantasy” JRPG. But what isn’t nearly as widely known about it is the incredible amount of boss fights that the series has. This action RPG franchise has some of the best-designed and toughest bosses one can find in a modern game. Here are three bosses that prove that bold claim.
Kingdom Hearts 2- Roxas
In Kingdom Hearts 2, one of the bosses near the end of the game is Roxas. This is a very special character to the main plot, as he is a playable character. Roxas is actually a relative of the main character, Sora. There’s a lot of really confusing and hard-to-explain Kingdom Hearts lore behind the scenes here. Basically, Roxas and Sora are intertwined in a way they can’t control. The story is really cool and dramatic, and the boss fight is just excellent. Roxas uses two keyblades, Sora’s weapon of choice.
This makes the fight super fast-paced but also really fun. Roxas has a lot of wide-sweeping and fast attacks. It can be really intimidating to fight him, because some attacks the player can guard against, while others the player must manually dodge. The coolest part is that Sora can actually steal Roxas’ keyblades from him, making the fight much easier. Stylish players can even abuse the extra combo potential given to Sora with these new keyblades, essentially making this fight a cakewalk. On the higher difficulties, this fight is still fun, yet extremely challenging.
Kingdom Hearts 3- Yozora
Kingdom Hearts has a trend of having secret bosses that hint towards where the series will go. Kingdom Hearts 3 is no exception to this trend. In the Re:Mind DLC, the final secret boss is Yozora, a character from an in-game video game series, Verum Rex. Players familiar with Final Fantasy might notice he looks a lot like Final Fantasy XV’s Noctis Lucis Caelum. He might even give fans vibes of the canceled Final Fantasy Versus XIII. References aside, this may be the best boss fight in the series. It is easily the hardest. Yozora has a metric ton of moves at his disposal, which makes him even scarier.
The scariest part is how the boss AI will constantly mix the player up. Sometimes he’ll start with the same old same old, and sometimes he will start with his tougher moves. Some moves you have to block, and some moves you have to dodge-roll. Learning Yozora is just that, a learning experience. The advice the game gives the player is to “study” his moves. Yozora takes the cake easily for being the most challenging boss in the series due to his intimidating move list and breadth of ways to kill the player, but beating him is possibly the most satisfying moment in the entire series.
Kingdom Hearts 2 + 3 – Data Organization
This is a bit of a cheat, but lastly, the data organization. In Kingdom Hearts 2 and 3, there is a secret, unlockable level where Sora can go against thirteen super bosses. Yes, thirteen tough-as-nails super bosses will test the player’s reaction timing and pattern recognition. These levels in both 2 and 3 are really tough, but again, they are so satisfying. Some fights are easier than others, granted.
This writer would argue that the bosses in 3’s data organization are tougher than 2’s due to how many more forms and magic you get in 2. But both data organizations are very fun and challenging to fight. These levels are pretty much the encapsulation of the series. Great bosses with cool designs, tough patterns to remember, and great music to boot. These bosses are all challenging, but with some effort and work, anyone can overcome them. This truly attests to how incredible the fights in this series are.
