Krieg In Borderlands: Exploring Surprising Origins In 2024

krieg borderlands

Krieg in Borderlands quickly became a fan-favorite character with his first appearance in Borderlands 2. Based on the Psycho Bandit enemies found in the game, he is an unconventional yet deadly choice as a playable character. Complete with his own buzz axe and loose grip on sanity, this Psycho is a blast to control. With the Borderlands movie hitting theaters on August 9th, viewers may need a refresher on the main characters and the actors playing them. Here, we will shine the spotlight the Krieg the Psycho; including backstory, personality, and gameplay, as well as the film adaptation of his character.

Krieg In Borderlands: Our Favorite Psycho

Krieg was released as the sixth playable character for Borderlands 2 via post-release DLC and is one of the most memorable protagonists. Voiced by Jason Douglas, Krieg suffered abuse at the hands of his mother from a young age, being a weakling in her eyes. He worked as a bounty hunter before being captured by the Hyperion corporation and experimented upon by Dr. Benedict. Benedict performed horrific experiments on Krieg and other captured bandits, turning the surviving ones into Psychos. Psychos exhibit maniacal personalities and are prone to recklessness and suicidal impulses. Despite the constant physical and psychological terror Krieg endured, he survived.

Instead of the experimentation fully bringing out Krieg’s psychotic side, he developed a sort of inner voice as a way to keep some remnant of his sanity and will to live. He eventually learned he was to be disposed of along with the other test subjects, and that Benedict planned to experiment on children next. The Psycho broke out of captivity and killed Dr. Benedict, sparing others from his same fate. He continues to live with this psychosis, as the two voices battle for control. We find him wandering Pandora, killing bandits. Siren Maya engages him in combat, thinking he is hostile until he saves her from a group of rats. An unlikely alliance follows as Krieg joins the group.

Psycho Killer

As the Psycho character class, Krieg has a few unique abilities at his disposal. He is equipped with a buzz axe for a melee weapon, which is tied into his Action Skill, Buzz Axe Rampage. Activating this skill causes Krieg to exclusively use his buzz axe during its duration, giving him 500% melee damage and increased movement speed. He will also fully regenerate his health with each kill. The buzz axe can be thrown as well, doing 300% melee damage. This Action Skill is ideal for wrecking a lot of havoc in a little bit of time. Moving quickly between enemies while pulverizing them to pieces is a great strategy when playing as Krieg.

The Psycho class has three skill trees that can be upgraded to modify its abilities. The Bloodlust tree focuses on ranged combat, with stackable damage bonuses that increase per kill. Bloodlust encourages players to fight aggressively to keep these bonuses active like bullet kills increasing melee damage. The Mania tree uses seemingly counterintuitive methods to provide benefits, such as taking damage to speed up your Action Skill cooldown. The Hellborn tree centers around elemental damage and bonuses resulting from Krieg setting himself on fire. With so many abilities to choose from, he is a chaotic but versatile killing machine to be unleashed upon your enemies.

The Big Screen and Beyond

Many players enjoyed the sympathetic Psycho’s introduction as a playable character in the Borderlands series. Playing as the lovable Psycho is a massively fun experience; hearing him maniacally laugh while cutting through a horde of bandits never gets old. We’ll see how well actor Florian Munteanu does with the role as he is set to portray the Psycho on the big screen. How Munteanu handles the character’s identity psychosis and layered humanity will be interesting, as well as the dynamic with his co-stars. With so much fan love for the character, Munteanu has some crazy big shoes to fill.

Among the large cast of protagonists in the Borderlands franchise, Krieg is a standout addition to any group of Vault Hunters. With his surprisingly complex psyche and incredibly destructive playstyle, he is everyone’s favorite Psycho. He made a name for himself in the game by being an unexpected, but fierce and loyal ally to the group of Vault Hunters. His inclusion in the movie proves just how important he is to the fans, and hopefully, the filmmakers do him right. Regardless, Krieg is an awesome character with a surprising backstory that hopefully makes a return to the Borderlands in the future.
