Link is not the main character of Echoes of Wisdom. That would be Zelda for the very first time. The titular princess finally gets her own game this month, and the possibilities for what she can do with it are endless. One possibility that we considered when the game was first announced was that Link might be used as a foil to Zelda or perhaps even an enemy. We thought he might be a boss fight, one that would rival the most emotional in this long-running franchise. It’s impossible to tell presently whether or not that will be the case, but one thing is certain: He is going to fight Zelda.
Link Will Attack Zelda in Echoes of Wisdom
The most recent trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom doesn’t dive much into the story but instead focuses on showing off some new parts of the world. The dungeons were shown off, but the primary focus was the Still World. However, the five-minute trailer saved perhaps the most interesting video clip for last. After the game’s release date was shown, there were just a few seconds left in the video. Fans would be forgiven for closing it out then, but it showed the Hero turning to attack Zelda.
This is a very interesting story beat. We know from the trailer as a whole that those in the Still World are petrified and will eventually fade out of existence. That makes it very difficult to get them out. Based on the evidence, the princess is at least able to save the Hero of Time and bring him back to life. However, the Still World has done something to him. Obviously, he’s attacking the princess and he has a weird glow that resembles the Still World itself. Something is driving the swordsman to do this.
This Battle Could Be a Boss Fight
There’s very little information about the antagonist version of Link. He is shown in just a few seconds of an otherwise very long trailer. No other promotion has given any indication of the hero’s role other than that he will be playable in some capacity. This could make for an interesting and unprecedented boss fight. Perhaps the swordsman is in one of the final dungeons and the princess must fight him to proceed and save Hyrule.
There is potential for this to be the most emotional battle in the franchise. It’s unclear where this game falls on the timeline yet, but the Princess and her Hero do have a relationship. Whether it’s romantic or not, they know and are fond of each other. Forcing them to fight is an excellent choice for the narrative and it could be the most impactful boss fight yet seen in a Legend of Zelda title.
Most bosses are big monsters that most characters have no real connection to, so they lack emotion. The final battles with Ganondorf step up the emotion, but it would pale in comparison to seeing the legendary hero turned evil and fighting the princess he has sworn to protect. That brief clip thrown in at the end of the trailer is arguably more important than the five-and-a-half minutes before it.
Conclusion
Everything shown so far for The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom suggests that this is going to be another excellent entry to the franchise and a possible awards contender. It seems to be a merger between new and old Zelda games, and that could help set it apart in an ever-growing franchise. The inclusion of the normal hero as an antagonist, even if only briefly, might make this the most memorable title in a franchise full of classics.
