If you’ve ever felt like having a cosmic twist with your cozy farming sim, the recently released Little-Known Galaxy just might be the game for you. In this sweetly styled indie game, you get to meet a cute cast of crew members, explore different planets, and uncover secrets while taking the role of captain-in-training. With certain aspects similar to the ones found in the well-known Stardew Valley, this game takes rebuilding a community and growing diverse crops from a small town to a spaceship.
I took some time to blast off into Little-Known Galaxy’s story to see what it’s all about. Like with my other reviews, I’d like to introduce you to the people behind the game to share just how special it is. After learning about the developers myself, I came to appreciate this game even more than I already did.
A Little Info About Little-Known Galaxy
Little-Known Galaxy is a product from the imagination and creativity of Carbon & Kay. They’re a two-person team consisting of a husband and wife. Carbon took the role of artist and animator while Kay played the role of writer and programmer. This is the couple’s first game, and I will say that they did an amazing job with it. It’s always important to support indie games and the teams behind them, especially when it shows just how much love and dedication was put into making visions a reality.
In the game, you play as your very own captain that you name and customize before onboarding a ship that you also get to name. I decided to make my cute captain character look more like an alien than a human and name my ship the USS Starsong. Upon joining the crew, you are tasked with discovering the mystery of an ancient relic found on a seemingly desolate planet that is aptly named the Grey Planet.
What Makes the Game So Cozy
Carbon & Kay succeeded in their mission to make Little-Known Galaxy a cozy space-themed game. As I mentioned before, it does have similarities with games like Stardew Valley. However, this game takes those similarities and implements them in a way to makes them feel fresh and integrated into the story. For example, heading to the mines for materials and treasures is replaced with exploring planets to gather those things. Also, the shipping bin is replaced by a cute robot, and seasons are replaced with quarters.
With cozy games, I found some of the big selling points for me are a nice-looking art style, interesting characters to interact with, and a good story that ties everything together. I’m quite happy to say that this game absolutely nails those. The art for the environments and characters is simple yet adorable. The NPCs all have different quirks that set them apart from one another. The themes of mystery solving and space exploration are an automatic plus in my eyes. Of course, this is coming from someone who loves all things space.
What Could Be Added to Expand the Fun
While I’ve been enjoying my time on and off the USS Starsong, there are of course some additions that could be brought to Little-Known Galaxy to help add in even more fun. I’m specifically talking about the character creation in this game. While I did enjoy making my little alien captain, I think most people would appreciate more options in the menu. Different clothing styles, hair styles, and perhaps a color gradient option each customization could bring a lot to the game. Like with all RPGs, more options to make the character you want is always a great thing.
From looking at Carbon & Kay’s social media pages and website, I do know that they are working hard to support the game, so maybe we can expect some updates and additional content later down the line. I, for one, would be appreciative for anything they have to offer. I’ll also be on the lookout for any of their future projects. If you want to try Little-Known Galaxy for yourself, you can find it over on Steam for around $20. There is also a free demo available, which I think more games should have.
